V7 Top Case
« on: July 23, 2017, 10:57:10 PM »
I'm looking to add a permanent top case to the bike, so I could store the helmet and tool kit in it.

The problem is the rack actually. Could anyone recommend a small rack that i could have attach a top case to that doesn't spoil the looks either? Something smallish, but could hold the weight. AF1 sells this: http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=75525 which I like, but doubt that it would/should hold a top case with stuff in it...

If you have any pictures of your set up, please post.

Thank you!

I have a similar rack on my 2013 V7 Stone.  It is plenty strong.
I believe that topcases come with a mounting plate that attaches to rack then rack attaches to plate.  Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

Something to keep in mind when attaching an adapter to a luggage rack, make sure the attachment points are strong enough.

I actually attached an HB universal adapter to an HB rack and wound up breaking the rack a year or so later when I hit a pothole. In retrospect the cross-pieces on that HB rack weren't up to the task the way I mounted it (too much force on one thin aluminum cross piece). It might have worked fine attached differently, hard to say.

I will say that's the closest I ever had to a problem with an HB rack or adapter on 3 Guzzis and now 2 Harleys (both Harleys have topcases using HB universal adapters on aftermarket-sporty, or OEM-RK racks).

I'm very happy with the HB rack on the V7 Stone, and I HAVE used one of their larger topcases on it, but aesthetically it's a big rack and I prefer to use a smaller (40L) topcase more often than not.

The bargain Topcase from them is the Orbit, but it's huge at 52L and I think it would be just plain too big for a V7 (even though I'm sure it would fit).

Thank you Kev!

I'm honestly just looking for something square and lockable to store my helmet and tool pouch in. Just wondering if the small rack would work and won't fall off somewhere on a highway.

Thanks again!

Beware, unless you've got a particularly small head or an open-face helmet you'll likely need a topcase bigger than 40L (at least in the HBs) to fit a helmet.

I know this is not the best picture, I bought this top case from a Piagio scooter dealer in Marietta GA. It has the mounting adapter and a quick disconnect feature. It's on a Hepco Becker rack. It holds my water bottle, Switx copter helmet and gloves easily.

I have a V7 Stone and added the HB side case mounts and rack. I have 40 liter Junior side cases, and this top box https://www.amazon.com/Emgo-72-32440-Travel-Trunk/dp/B000GVD0VE/ref=pd_sbs_263_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000GVD0VE&pd_rd_r=5HXCY1QAPWJ9GPQW46Q2&pd_rd_w=ADKBI&pd_rd_wg=uMScl&psc=1&refRID=5HXCY1QAPWJ9GPQW46Q2

I have used this top case for years, it matched black BMW side cases, and it looks great with the Junior cases. It holds an xl full face helmet and a small tool roll just fine. The latch could be a bit beefier, but if you don't force it, it works as it should.
I had a BMW parts manager tell me if everyone knew about these, he would sell a lot less top cases.

The 45L and 55L top Junior Top cases will hold my Size L modular helmets.
The 40L will not though, maybe it will if I remove the little pocket thing that is in the lid.

The 45L (no longer sold) is slimmer looking that the 55L, but, the 55L is my go-to case for touring.
Though large, it doesn't look awful if the 30L Junior side cases are mounted.    For commuting and errands, I run just the 30L side cases, or 45L top case (w/o the side cases), also doesn't look awful.

Top cases never help the look of any bike, IMHO.   Some just hurt the looks more than others.

OK, that bike was ugly before the top case, but, looks even worse with it.

As I see it ......... that case is the goldilocks for the V7, not to small, not too large. Very nice, I like it.  :thumb:

For ME, the "Goldilocks" size/shape topcase for the V7 is the HB 40L:

That looks really well on the V7. The whole setup does.
