I use a beam type to see where I am (like an existing preload) and a click type to see where I want to be (like head torque).  My go-to is the clicker.  Like a talking clock, it gives positive feedback in any orientation, day or night, whether you can see it or not.  The beam type is more like a sundial.  Only works when the light is right and you can see it, and its value changes depending on the line of your eye to the scale.
