Carcano: Rifles and Moto Guzzis?
« on: August 07, 2017, 09:41:27 PM »
In another thread about the history of Guzzi engines, I learned that an engineer named Carcano had a hand in Guzzi engine design.

Another semi-famous Carcano designed the Italian 6.5 mm bolt action service rifle.

Any relation?  Or is "Carcano"' a common Italian name?

I don't know if it was the same group or not.  The carcano rifle in 6.5mm dates back to the late 1800's.  At about the beginning of hostilities in the late 1930's it got reworked some and rechambered to 7.35x52 (iirc).  A crapload of those were provided to US civilians after the war by govm't programs, and a lot were distributed through the NRA and mail order outlets.  I got one.  So did Lee H. Oswald.

The rifle apparently is-named the Carcano was properly called the M91, which designated when it was (nominally) accepted for use by the Italian Army (1891, but actually a bit later from some accounts). It was reportedly designed by a sergeant named Carcano (interesting how many infantry weapons are designed by those that need them!).

The Guzzi designer was active in the 50s, 60s and possibly later, though I don't have much info on him. No idea whether the two were related, but it's not a name I've run across a lot, so I don't think it's terribly common. Maybe they are tied together in some degree...

All you need to do to understand that Oswald could not have shot Kennedy is try to operate a Carcano with aimed shots in the amount of time he was supposed to have fired his.

I posted that as just a historical factoid.  Not trying to derail this into conspiracy theories.

Here we go.  Let's see how long it takes for this thread to get burned to the ground.

No offense, RK, but you laid the bait for this one.  The OP could have predicted the response.

Yep.  I don't think I've seen an article, discussion, or post in the last 50 years where the term "Carcano" is not accompanied by "Oswald", no matter how it starts ....

Gotta wonder...

The rifle was developed in the 1880s-90s but engineering has long been a family-tradition in Italy. I'm guessing it's not a coincidence.
