Lario with Suzuki valves

Bought it off a friend who's been riding it for years then parked for another 5, intention as always to put Luddited late small block in it, pref V9 or V73 but heron 750 would be start now , just missed a Breva on online auction I bid too late, went for $700, spewing.

The Lario was built by expert I spoke to him at length, seemed to know answers, said he'd done lots, Suz valves and springs blah blah, totally fixed he thought.
Anyway I gave it major service, new boots, got rid of the electronic ignition that wouldn't let it rev over 5 cleanly (possibly why it never went pop, it never went vroom vroom properly either.
The thing was fabulous, totally convinced me small block with some go is awesome, for 2 weeks.


So I have a good Left side for sale or want to buy a good right side (barrel piston and comp head)

Not sure I should waste my time but I want to know why, saw every single one do this in 80's, I wouldn't even ride one but it has to very simple valve to valve or piston clearance issue IMHO

You dont bugger things by half eh Martin.
Obviously there is no simple answer, if there was this issue would have been cured 20 years ago.
Suzuki valves and springs as you stated were supposed to be the cure, maybe people who owned them did do that mod then sold them before it happened again.
A "modern" engine in that frame would be a hoot.

I was talking with a guy at the National, he put 2 Valve heads on the one he had there. I thought that was a good fix.

It is.  All you need to do is find an Aero engine.. 
I hate that, Martin. I would have continued to experiment with the 4V heads myself. I *like* the character of the 4V. It's a sweet running thing, but I don't have to tell you that.
Kevdog swears by his Milich special with Kibblewhite valves and dlc.. but.. I don't think he runs it much. I know he says he doesn't go over 7000 rpm. What's the fun in that?

I believe Millenium technologies has the cad file to recut the combustion chamber after welding. If you don't find another head, that could be an answer.

that is a pity , i had it happen on my lario too.

i have been looking at suzuki (alto) valves, seemed the way to go. may be not...
i just bought a blown V35 imola 4 engine , should have been fun , a big bore 350 , taking it to just under 500cc.
apparently they are even worse than the v65 lumps , because they rev higher...
after dropping a valve the seller had the engine rebuilt by a specialist with all the right bits,
it dropped a valve again after 1000 km. 
the V35 camshaft was missing  most of one cam , and the others were worn .
probably didn t help.

If anyone can figure it out, you're the man. In the Aero engine thread, I said I'd love to experiment with the 4V some more, but when I found the Aero engine with thousands of hours of proven reliability it was a no brainer.

My understanding was not that it was a fix to use Suzuki valves but to use Suzuki valve springs. Specifically those off a GN 250, although of course they are probably common to other models too. Only the outer springs mind, (With no inner springs at all.) and use the Suzuki caps with the original Lario collets.

As stated, this just what I was given to understand. I have no first had experience of trying to put the pin back in the grenade!

From memory from my time at Mecca in the mid eighties the worst of the lot were the V75! The shop sold one of those and it didn't even make it to Bristol from South London before it shed a valve head!

Its amazing how Guzzi could screw up 4 valve heads and hydraulic lifters. Both had been tried and true looong before Guzzi implemented their use.

Time and $ the question, but what really grates me is the factory did fix it, the Dakar race bikes didnn�t win but survived several distance desert races, a friend has one and will hold 9k rpm on road. I�d be happy with 8.
Is just like Ape sxv story really, fix all issues, spend millions on Dakar then stop production. Or bevel dukes, finally fit plain bearings, make a few and stop.
Or Guzzi big 4 valvers .......

Easy answer has to be crashed v9 but if I can find aero , of course i�d jump at it.
Apparently they all went to Israel,  we need inside man there

But if I find good rh side , plasticine comes out for a measure before I run again

I just so happen to have what you need. My friend owned a Lario and as a preventitive measure he had Ace Malott do the head work. These heads have been completely gone thru with all new Kibblewhite DLC valves, new springs, all new hardware & heads ported. To say this bike ran very well is a gross understatement. It's been two years having the piss ran out of it and holding together as well as a airdrone engine. Now here is where the story gets interesting, he allowed his nephew to ride the bike and with sun in his eyes he crashed it. Of course the bike was totaled and I swapped some Guzzi stiluff for the bike.
