A patient mechanical genius of a builder ....
« on: August 23, 2017, 09:57:54 PM »
These wind-powered structures are pretty amazing, to me anyhow.

How does someone come up with such a thing?

See, this is why non-Guzzi content is so worthwhile.

Interested parties may wish to build one from a kit:

Or get the files and print one on your 3D printer:

Thanks for putting that up Lannis - I'd forgotten just how mesmerising they are!

Anyway, he has a web site to buy small versions http://www.strandbeest.com/shop/index.php - I think that might be a birthday present for me in October

EDIT Sorry LeRoy just spotted your earlier post -  still might be a birthday present though  :thumb:

Large supra orbital lobes and opposable thumbs win again!

I could go on a bit but I think I'd be getting contentious.

I accidentally stumbled in to a large exhibit of his work at the Cultural Center here in Chicago (I was there for some other reason) - got to handle life size machines and really examine the construction.  Totally amazing, I was smitten.  It's no hobby though, the culmination of his life's work

Wonder how he makes any money at it?   Usually, these artistic things that appeal to us gearheads are part of slowly starving ....

As always, I did a search first to make sure I wasn't unnecessarily duplicating anything.   I tried "wind powered", "Strandbeest", "Dutch inventor", and any other search terms I could think of, and turned up nothing here.   Maybe I used the wrong terms, but even if so, a lot of people including me don't remember seeing it, so (unlike the old Joke Thread, where the same joke would show up every 3 days as if it were new) I thought it was worth a shot.   :thumb:

Now it's on YOU!      If you can point the thread out of the archives where it was up before, it'll help in future search processes.   If you CAN'T, you know that I'll claim that you're getting forgetful as well as grumpy, that it was never posted here, and that you even think that a regular bike will fit straight into a Transit van ....

Lannis, I *am* old, forgetful, and grumpy, and I can't find a thing in the archives since that's been done. I'm 99% sure I saw it here, though.  I'll look, but don't hold out much hope.
