Camping Near Meadows of Dan, VA Question
« on: August 25, 2017, 09:36:46 AM »
My daughter and I are planning a short motorcycle camping trip that we'll take in the next month or so.  We want to ride out to around Meadows of Dan, VA and camp overnight.  The next day we'll ride "The Back of the Dragon" to Tazewell, VA and back to the camp site and spend another night there, returning home in the morning.

Willville Motorcycle Campground is a possibility, as well as Meadows of Dan Campground.  I know this group has stayed at Willville and has favorable things to say about it.  When I read about them on the web, it appears that MOD has some things like a grill at each site, as well as electricity at the tent sites.  I don't see either at Willville, although they have the large shelter that's good for big groups.

For two people spending two nights, which would be the better campground to stay at?

Gee... That name brings back memories. I lived a few miles away from Meadows of Dan, near Buffalo Mountain. I don't know if it is still there, or even under the same name, but Daddy Rabbits Campground on 799 was an excellent place to stay. maybe 5 miles from MOD, towards Willis.

No grills and no outlets at the tent sites (and they're all tent sites) at Willville.   Water taps and a couple outlets out in the campground, and the big shelter with gas grills, but otherwise bike-primitive.

Me personal, I'd stay at Willville just because it's bike-only, the wash house is clean, and everything you need is there somewhere, just not right on the sites ....  I don't know the other campgrounds.

If you have a short extension cord you can have electric in your tent at Willville. There are a few water spikets nearby also.
There is one cabin with a large bed and a bunk house with 5 bunks/beds. There is a gas grill under the pavilion that you could use.
Will is also a great source of  premier motorcycle roads in the area.
Good luck!!

Lee, thanks for the recommendation for Daddy Rabbit's Campground.

In comparing the now three choices, it seems like Meadows of Dan Campground is really more suited to trailers and motor homes.  Reviews say it's a nice place with clean facilities, but the tent spaces are small.

Willville sounds better after the firsthand comments about the facilities that weren't obvious in photos of the place, but it appears to be a generally open place with little privacy.  They do mention an ADV section that's more secluded.

Daddy Rabbit's Campground looks very attractive, because it seems to have numerous large and well separated tent sites, all of which have water and electricity.  I could easily do without electricity, but it would make phone charging very simple, and not needing an extension cord is a small plus.

Thanks for the help so far, it's nice to know there are three decent places to choose from right there near Meadows of Dan.

There are available outlets in the pavilion and by the check-in area also

Whatever your choice, you'll have plenty of great roads in the area to enjoy yourselves!!
