I put it against the circlip, but that's just me.

I called Curtis Harper and he said it was tapered and the relief side went to the final drive side. I checked for slop and the one direction wiggled more than the way Curtis said. Thank You. It is together now.

Tapered?  What is tapered?

" Which direction does the spline coupling go ? "

In my experience they're pretty consistent about going the same direction as the rest of the bike.

If it deviates by very much you'll know right away.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Convert rear drives and drive shafts do not have circlips.

I was quoting Curtis. The coupling went on the male splines with wiggle in it one way and when I turned it end for end it went on with no wiggle. That was with the relief  toward the final drive. There is a rubber spacer and then a snap ring on the tranny shaft. So everybody is right.

Thanks for clarifying that.

The coupling should not show any more slop in either direction.  In other words, it's not tapered.  If it was, it would ride up and bind on the male splines, and you would lose your plunge.  Gotta have that plunge.  Look at the female splines carefully.  Are they nice and square, or are they "tented"/look like triangles with flat tops?  Is there a ridge going around the inside center of the coupler?  These an taper are classic signs of a worn coupler.
