Easy tire question, I promised 07
« on: October 14, 2017, 04:44:11 PM »
07 Calvin, my hand manual calls for a 170/80-17 but if you look at the spec chart on the bike on line it gives the tire size as 140/70-17. I ordered and received the 140/80-17. Is the 140/80 going to fit ok?
Thanks in advance in case a tire argument erupts:(

Nope , the 80 series tire will cause the Calvin to explode , shredding into a brazillion little pieces .

Or it won't cause any problems .

 Likely the latter

It's also ok to put a tube in it, then it will not explode. It may if you have burrs.

The 140/80-17 rear tire is going to make your gearing a little taller (250 rpm) and make your speedo more accurate, while raising your seat 1/4" and your bike will lean over a little more on it's side stand, + give you a little more ground clearance when cornering.  Your rear tire should last a little longer too.  The taller tire should fit OK but you will lose a little clearance between the tire and the rear fender which shouldn't matter unless you ride 2up + a lot of luggage and then it might matter but not automatically, unless you have put softer rear shocks on the bike too.

Thanks Wayne for the good to know information. I had checked my speedometer with the mile markers in the past and found it tso be 4 mph off, that explains it. The part about more lean in the side stand in not welcome as its a little challenge to get up at times now if on a grade. A little higher off the

ground dont make much difference either way as ground clearance was not an issue, I had plenty and my legs are long enough to hadle another half inch. All good to know, thanks again!
