Forum "Buddy List" whats it for can you send messages to or ???

Im an idiot I guess.  What is the purpose of adding someone to your buddy list?  What can you do with that?  Is there a way you can compose a message to everyone on your buddy list or what exactly does having a buddy list accomplish on the forum?  I think I'm missing something here?  Thanks for any help.

I as k3d same question several years ago.
Apparently it was part of a instant messaging system allowing you to privately communicate with your buddies on the forum.

I think everyone uses their phones now.

Was it this forum where in the previous incarnation there was an option to ignore a given user? And once we figured it out, some of us were disappointed that our dashboard showed that nobody was ignoring us. I remember being pleased when finally somebody ignored me.
