It has been done -- once -- by one of the owner/riders in Europe.  I don't remember his name.  However, it was not a "drop in" and required a lot of fabrication and rework.

You might want to consider trying to locate one of the auxillary fuel tanks that were available from Italy in that time frame.  They mount on the right hand side in that space opposite the muffler.  Contact Zoom Zoom (John Henry) for more information on that accessory.  He has one on his Stelvio.

Or -- you could buy/mount an accessory fuel tank, similar to those used by Iron Butt riders on their bikes.  They come in various sizes and could be mounted on the rear rack.  You're probably only looking for two to four gallons more of fuel to get added range.

Or -- as a last resort, you could carry a couple of Rotopaks.  They come in various sizes and can be mounted on the sides/rear/top of a rear top case.  The down side to them is that you have to stop and pour the gas into the main tank.
Essential to the pursuit of happiness is knowing when you've caught it.
Life's what happens while you're making other plans.
I always knew I'd get old.  How fast it happened was a bit of a surprise, though.

Yeah, it's a big job. Lots of stuff needs to be changed besides the tank. Paul Mineart is the bloke who has done it in Europe.

Hope your 2009 has been rollerised? If not that's your first job.

The Aux Tank was made by Stucchi and sold through MG Cycle. Rather expensive but probably cheaper than the conversion to a bigger tank. Once installed, you have an additional 3 gallons of fuel with its own fuel pump. Switch gear on the handlebar switches tanks.

I would be surprised if they can still be had at this time. When the big tank Stelvios came out, I believe they (Stucchi) stopped making them. I always wondered if someone would buy the aux tank for a newer Stelvio so they could pretty much roam the country without worry of fuel. I don't know if anybody ever did that.

Anyway, I think it has been a great addition to my Stelvio! If there are any still hiding on a shelf somewhere, someone ought to be grabbing it.

I did that, and afterwards several others too. If you have to buy all new, it is expensive. Most do it with parts from a crashed bike. You need al plastics between headlight and saddle, new fuel pump.

yes, my mate did that a few months back on his 2008 Stelvio

got to grind away a few tabs on the frame and fabricate small panels to fill up the gap between the new tank and the headlight housing

Stelvio Pete in the UK did one, he isn't a high mileage guy and I quizzed him at length at the Scottish Rally about it. I remember him saying he wouldn't do it again and it would have been far cheaper just buying a big tank model despite the fact he preferred the power characteristics of the older bike.
