truth in advertising, Philly CL ad for 2016 Ducati
« on: December 03, 2017, 01:52:01 PM »
Nice ducati here for sale on CL. Can you you spot the three inconsistencies in this ad?

https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/mcy/6410910071.html
Selling my pretty much brand new ducati monster 821 stripe edition. I bought the bike brand new from a delear about a month ago. I spent almost 15k out the door with all the taxes and fees. I realize I never have time to ride it . My lost is your gain honestly this is a steal. The bike was built in 2016 but I bought it in May 2017 NEW. The bike is the stripe edition meaning that it comes with the front panel and fully adjustable suspensions up front. The bike has 3 riding modes, ABS and Traction control. The riding is very comfortable and great all around bike. Great for the city and also twistes. I even know some people who take it on the track on the sport mode. I just got the first maintenance done so you're good until 7000 miles for the next one. The bike has only 800 miles! It has never been drop or crashed. You can see it in person the bike is brand new. I'm financing the bike and I spoke to my financial company and the title will be released right after I pay off the bike which would be immediately after we finalize the transaction. Only serious inquires. Like I said my loss is your gain. Let me know. Luca

Yes, listing two different timelines for the purchase, and the mileage is listed at 800 and 1500.

It can only be new once.  It's used albeit with low mileage and in "like new condition".

Sounds like a scam.  He wants to sell it but he'll finance it.  Essentially, you'll have the bike registered and titled in his name.  The lien clearance would still be held by the original lien holder.  I'd tread very carefully.  Kind of like a sub-lease without the landlord's knowledge or approval.

Not sure , I think he meant he has a loan out on the bike and needs to pay that off . The ad is hard to understand .

He probably grabbed too much throttle and scared himself off the bike.

Well, the third inconsistency  in the ad, is stating that he paid $15,000 after tax tags etc. Even if he bought it at list, of $11,995, that leave $3000 for tax, setup fee and tags. I can't imagine it would cost $3000 for those fees. Also, doubtful that it was sold at list.

On the mileage and month he may have started to advertise it in June when it had 800 miles on it and he's blocked/copied and reused the add a few times since then, updating the mileage on the form he fills out for Craigslist but not bothering to touch the text of the ad....

Kev,

Good point, I can see that happening. The ad has just been up for about two hours though.

What really surprised me was the "$15,000" original purchase price claim.

Yeah you put the ad up, it expires, wait a month put it up again etc.

On the price, maybe he bought an Arai and leathers at the same time and rounded up. [emoji6]

I notice all kinds of miss spellings and poor sentence structure right off the bat.   Not interested any way.

That was what I thought ... the small mileage and timing inconsistencies can happen with a bike you're still riding, so I wouldn't hold that against it.

Not to be constantly blackguarding the seller, but I do have a prejudice about buying from sellers who practice "keyword spamming" in their ads, listing a lot of words/brands that have nothing to do with their bike but will tend to grab the attention of a search engine.    There seems to be something slightly "sharp" about that, and it gets me wondering what other not-illegal but borderline-unethical things might be going on ....
