Send us your snow, please.

So far after decades of So Cal residence, the fire is always near me, but not where I am.

So I am lucky - or, it's unlucky to live near me, not certain which. Hmmmm.... that reads as though I would make a good arson suspect.

Okay, let me rephrase that - I live in a part of the state that catches fire regularly. That and some earthquakes.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

We had a relatively wet winter which was great for the drought but also created a lot of flammable shrubs.  I can't remember the last time it rained in San Diego.

I've been dealing with a roof full of dry pine needles and palm fronds on the power line which my absentee landlord in Florida doesn't think is a big enough deal to pay a clean up crew for ASAP!  :violent1:

Seriously I have a 2 inch thick coating of pine needles on my roof and it is extremely slippery.  I would clean it myself but fall gear is mandatory!

Pardon my stereotyping by state, but don't you also have lobsters like we have burritos ? You know, on every block ?

'Cause if you can bring lobsters and beer, we might be able to forgive the snow you sent only making it to the midwest  :undecided:

It's supposed to be in the mid 80's for the next few days. Cool enough though at nite to change to my insulated gloves with fingers. Been using the finger less gloves.

Down side has been the winds and plants that can't figure out what time of year it should be. I need to buy stock in Kleenex tissues!

And to RG. The news always makes things sound like a entire area has gone to heck. Yes the fires have been bad in the more woodlands areas. In the concrete street house to house city, there is not much change.

But, a few years ago, the fires were so bad in the hills surrounding L.A. and the winds were just right that the smoke in my area looked like there must be a fire in my neighborhood. It was hard to see about 100yds, the smoke was so thick. Ash was everywhere as well.

Thanks for the wishes! Stay warm!

If soCal houses have shake roofs it certainly doesn't help in this situation.  I'm wondering how hard the HO fire insurance companies are going to be hit on these conditions. I'm sure those that survive are going to see their homeowners ins. going up.  200K told to evacuate....where can they all go and who replaces them in their jobs in the short term?

In some parts of California homeowners insurance is almost impossible to get. You have to get a state supported plan that can cost 3 times regular insurance and it only covers fire damage.

Thanks for the kind sentiment though it's not THAT bad. One fatality is one too many but the elderly woman died in a traffic collision. It was during an active evacuation so it's attributed to fire .

So far 800 houses are no longer existent.  I'd call that pretty bad .  Your Gov. Moonbeam today says it's the new norm.  Is this the price of living in a sanctuary State?

The OP raise the concern of personal safety, you're now raising the concern of structures - two different things.

No need to be scared, the news has an interest to exploit circumstance to peak interest if not fixation among viewers.

Some politics are creeping into the replies here.  Saying what's "that bad" or not reminds me of the difference between a recession and a depression: A recession is when your neighbor loses his job.  A depression is when you lose YOUR job!"  If my neighbors house burns down, man that's tough.  If my house burns down...Hey, wait a minute!!!  And how will anyone insure their homes if all the insurance companies quite writing policies in southern California just like they did along coastal Florida after the hurricanes?

True enough except the OP specifically addressed concern for personal safety, not property & THAT specifically is what was responded to. No problem aggregating the two if that's what YOU want to talk about but conflating the two post hoc to make a point is disingenuous.

That is the norm in California. If you live in a brush fire or wooded area you will have a hard and expensive time insuring your house if at all.

I have heard of people with the means out there buying decommissioned fire trucks and keeping them full of water ready to go.

Fire trucks only hold so much H20.  They depend on the fire hydrants to  supply them H20 mostly and those sources are limited too.  Because these fires are fed by winds that go in many directions the fire fighters have had to ignore some houses and only try to protect others.  Every year now this happens when the seasonal Santa Ana winds show up .

No one can film & make a narrative better than the media industry here in CA. This narrative is a double edge sword. On one hand people think CA has burnt up. OTOH it will be used to acquire large amounts of money. I'm NOT talking politics here just the flow of money. That money likely originates from the same place as all other federal expenses comes from, the sale of bonds. YOUR state will share a burden towards repayment with interest. It will have wide spread support thanks to conditioned media consumers. IOW CA will use this to take money from YOU! To be fair, every state does it now, some better than others, it's to be expected.

A structure may be 1/7 th the cost of the property, in rural areas it could be far less. The LAND doesn't disappear after a fire. So the majority of the value of the property is retained. New money is released into the local economy via insurance checks drawn from nationwide companies, once again, possibly the SAME insurance group that insures in YOUR state causing YOUR insurance to increase. Properties are exchanged & rebuilt. It's not all bad. It sucks if it was YOU but the ones who are at risk weren't blind to it.

It will all be forgotten about in exactly two weeks, as the attention span of the media consumer isn't all that long.
