........ being able to find a phone number for free on the Internet?  All i want to find is a land line number.  Don't care about their criminal record, party affiliation, their previous residence.  Just their phone number.  For free.

Yep, used to be able to do that, not so easy any more.

I guess the providers can't make money with that service these days.   Unlike when the phone company used to send the directory or Yellow Pages to your house so that you could know the numbers to call their customers and help the customers make money so they would continue to advertise and thus make money for the phone company, there's no motivation for anyone to maintain and publish such a list any more ....

You can tell that the web is not a "public service" any more.   Like, if you're running an "Ad Blocker", sites will detect it and demand that you shut it off; I've never really figured this one out, since if you have an Ad Blocker, it's because ads p!ss you off and you don't want to look at them; how "forcing" you to look at them will enhance their revenues, I don't know.

BUT they don't owe us anything, including free directory services ... !

Lannis (PS, I just tried "whitepages" as Lcarlson suggested and it DID give me my own land-line, so I guess there's still ways to do it ...)
