Top-end measuring tools
« on: January 10, 2018, 08:45:54 AM »
Looking for a list of the minimum tools I'll need to measure my pistons, wrist pin, ring end-gap, groove width, valve stems, other things, etc. Not sure about cyl diameter, I suppose if I'm getting them re-plated that's a moot point.

I had these tools 20+ yrs ago when I did my Eldo, but I forgot what I used, and need a fresh set now.

Calipers I USED to have were vernier, is a dial guage preferred, or is everything digital now?

The piston and wrist pin is what I'm most interested in, also main bearings. I'd like to know how far from serviceable spec those are. Also the crank journals.

I recall using plasti-guage when I check the fit of the rod bearings to the journals.

I'm good at searching for the source of tools, I'd just like an opinion of what type of tools I should collect.

Thanks!

vernier
There's a reason they are called "very nears."  A dial caliper is no more accurate, just quicker and easier to use. Very handy for general non precision measuring, and should be in every shop.

wrist pin
That'll take a good micrometer and the ability to use it. As my pup Austin has found, there is some skill involved.

ring end-gap
your calipers will do that easily.

groove width
Feeler gauges.

valve stems
micrometer again and small hole gauges if you want to check the guides.
