It can't be this bad ...... can it?
« on: January 20, 2018, 08:08:31 PM »
A good high school buddy, who like me, is now retired, sent me this link.

I have three wonderful granddaughters who, I know, are not like this AT ALL, but I thought this short video was a hoot!

Had the 18 yr old grandson and four of his mates on holiday with me. As soon as there was a pause in things all 5 had their heads buried in the phones.

I had a young lady work for me a couple yeas ago, she spent about a third of her day on her cell phone and a third of her day walking around the office socializing, the other third of the day she made a feeble attempt at her job. This went on for a couple weeks while being told every other day to leave the phone off and make her calls at break or lunch. No matter how many warnings she just refused to change. After three weeks I fired her, she was SHOCKED!!. I heard she has bounced out of several other jobs and now is working in a coffee shop.

Most of the young people who work for me are good kids, they work hard and they take their job seriously but every year I get at least one that thinks that coming on around 9:30 a.m. and being on their phone all day is acceptable.

Not one of these idiots ever see the inevitable coming and can't believe that they could be let go.

19 year old Daughter.  She is not like this, but we know people like this.  Very close to the truth.  Funny.

I was telling Her and other Family members recently that people today remind me of Catholic School.  Everyone walked with their head down, hands together holding the Catechism book at their chest, quietly and blindly towards the Church.  The phone has replaced the Catechism.

It is called "device addiction" . Most young folks aren't like this , every generation produces some self absorbed individuals that can't understand how things really work . This video is kind of an exaggeration of the stereotype , the young lady plays the role well doesn't she ?

Lots of great kids coming up.

My 21 yo daughter is in her third year of civil engineering with great grades.  She is a project manager with her schools Engineers Without Borders, and went to Africa last summer to build rain water catchment systems on a school house in a tiny community (village, it turns out, is not PC).

I agree with you totally.  I'm sorry now that I posted this video.  Can't pull it since I am the first poster in this thread.

Your daughter sounds like she is where my granddaughter is headed.  When I was visiting at Christmas, I asked 'Livvy' if she wanted to work for a high tech company in a contemporary hi tech job.  Her response was, "No grandpa, I want to learn about what is happening over the earth or under the earth.  She is extremely bright, and I pray I'm on this earth long enough to see where life takes her.  It'll be exciting!  She's an ambitious young lady.

I suggested to my Daughter many times to seek a career normally filled by men.  NASA was recruiting for Mars Missions.  She thought about it.   I suggested river boat pilot at a Pilot and Seminary College in Paducah, KY.  Not interested.   I am not worried about Her.  She is very smart, focused and outgoing.  She is way ahead of where I was at Her age.  Funny how we turn into Our parents and look at young people as a bunch of losers.  They are not though.  I have depended on many people half my age and young to do things I never would be able to do.  I think the Human Race will survive and do fine for a very long time.

Don't be. There are many like that sadly. It may be intended as a bit of a spoof but unfortunately even an old fart like me know youngies that are close to approaching that.

Device addiction sadly is real.

I retired from my job as a university professor 2 years ago; taught courses at all levels: freshman, senior, graduate. All of the grad students worked very hard; the vast majority of the seniors were responsible and realized how difficult it was to succeed in a science program. However, a significant percentage of the freshman were clueless: many just couldn't put their cell phones away during lectures or labs; many would show up for class late or not at all; quite a few failed the classes, but couldn't understand how I could possibly fail them, as if the problem was my unrealistic expectations. I think most of these clueless freshman fell by the wayside and never made it to my senior level classes. I hope the alternative explanation for the class-level differences is not true: that the younger folks tended to be less responsible and were more likely to be addicted to social media, suggesting that an increasing number of young people, like the one in Bob's video, are in the pipeline.

Im glad you posted it , I got a kick out of it. Finding and keeping good personnel is hard. Firing them is hard too, especially if you like them.

This is the great thing about getting old ... There's ALWAYS something new to talk about!

Two or three weeks ago we had a thread called "A Millennial's Perspective" where we talked about exactly the same things - how some kids are doing well, how some are worthless and buried in their phones, and how people always think that the kids are going to hell in a handbasket, from Aristotle's time on.

As we shake our canes, we're always seeing new movies we've never seen before, meeting new people we (think) we've never met before, I'll tell you, you can't beat it!   And uphill both directions too ....

My grandson is going on 19 and has already landed a full time job as a firefighter. I am retired LEO and ask him if he knew why God made police officers. He said he didn’t know why. I informed him that God made police officers so firemen would have someone to look up to. Can anyone believe that little rascal failed to see the humor in that 😂

Who needed smartphones?  We had this ....... and 283 Chevys, and drive ins where you could buy beer on curb.  I remember seeing the man in 1960-61, at the Charleston WV Municipal Auditorium.  Wearing a pair of glasses so thick that, in the floodlights, they looked like he was wearing a pair of headlights on his head!

Take me back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahsz_FtiHdk

And then a few years later ...... the man could rock!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeZHB3ozglQ

I wouldn't post these links, except that there might be a few of you who weren't born when folks like Bo were rocking,  Well, maybe not many, but of few of you youngsters.

Not just this generation. I remember my freshman year (1973) living in a dorm at a state college. I think only about half of the students on my floor came back second semester.
