Cycle World mag. now 4 issues a year....
« on: January 24, 2018, 08:39:43 PM »
...instead of 12.  Remember not too long ago I brought this change of issues up and now it's official according to https://www.superbikeplanet.com.  Rider mag., the only other MC mag. I get is still 12 issues/year and it's subscriber rolls are growing.

The big names go smaller or turn off the lights......  My subscription to Rolls Royce & Bentley just went from 4 to 8 months a year.

I still take Rider. Takes all of 5 minutes to finish it off.  I look at the vintage bike in the back. See what Clem is rambling about. Then see if yet another of Bill Stermers daughters is reviewing bikes..... :Beating_A_Dead_Hors e_by_liviu

great minds think alike.  Except you're way deeper since I don't know Stermer's daughters.  But I do look at the maps as I thumb through.  Maybe some pictures too.

Then according to you guys I'm a dimwit 'cause it takes me over an hour to peruse my new Rider.  But wait, what makes you 2 so smart if you pay $12 a year for 5 min. of enjoyment a month whilst I get oodles of more enjoyment for my $12?

When I finally gave up on 'Motorcyclist' mag a few years back, I believe they were begging me for $5.97 for 12 issues. I didn't see how they could even pay the postage on the rag at that point.

Less physical printing...means more profit.

Not necessarily, though.   Less cost for printing, sure, and less to pay Kevin C. for 4 articles a year rather than 12 .... but also less subscription revenue, and less advertising revenue, as advertisers won't pay as much for 1/3 the coverage.

How that translates into profit, I don't know, not being in that business.   But profit USUALLY goes the other way on volume ....

Doesn't CW maintain a web publishing presence?

Advertisers pay for that too.

Don't know the economics of that, either, and how it supports (or not) the paper publication.

I was going simply from the percentage of fixed cost (permanent staff, facilities, etc) that has to be absorbed by each magazine sold and stays pretty constant with volume, as opposed to the variable cost (paper, ink, transport), which goes down with the number printed.

It could be that the web-version is carrying the mag, and the paper copies are publicity tools and loss-leaders ...

No problem.  Less of "the 2010 bike, with 3 more hp is superior to all other bikes that came before it.  then, the 2018 bike, with 3 more hp and 17 selections for everything but speedo color is so much superior to every bike ever made we don't k
understand how anybody can't want it."   And on and on................. .........

If it wasn't for KC and Egan every now and again CycleWorld would be useless.
Harsh?  Yep.

As we've mentioned before, how many different ways (from 1984 to now) can you write "Sportbike Shootout At Willow Springs"?

Or every time they review a Guzzi, the article starts off with "tractor, tractor, tractor".

I get Rider and classic bikes. The rest just bore me. Don't like looking on line either. I like holding a real book or magazine in my hands. Then a few times a year, I take old issues to the VA clinic and set them in the reading material racks for other vets to look at.
yeah, I might be addicted to brake fluid. But I can stop any time I want.
