My GPS is stuffed!
« on: February 03, 2018, 09:02:01 PM »
OK, so it seems my Zumo 660 got knocked about a bit on my recent trip to NZ. Question is if the screen is stuffed can I replace it?

I've found various vids and stuff on the inter webs but I don't know whether replacing just the outer bit of the screen is sufficient or if I need to replace other components as well?

This sort of thing is NOT my forte so if any of you electronic whizzes can help me out id appreciate it. :thumb:

Does stuffed mean the screen is cracked or isn't showing anything (totally black screen) or ?

Yup, done like a dinner.

Was weird. It had been sold to him as a 2012 but was in fact a 2009! Hence the fact we ended up ordering the wrong kit and I had to fly over with the second one.

Lesson learnt. We'll insist on photos next time.

Goes like a cut cat, very satisfactory!

Yup, but is it repairable? It's been a good unit.

Thanks. I'd seen the vid, I just wasn't sure if that part was the only part I'd need. Well, it's worth a try innit.

Once again, thanks.

Some LCD display connectors need a good magnifier to release the latch on. But likely not to hard to replace.
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

Hey Pete, you've probably already done this but if you haven't... A hard reset (power button down for 8 seconds) is worth a shot.

I don't know the GPS units but I know phone units will typically still at least show an image if it's simply a cracked screen.  Having said that, if the replacement cost isn't high it's certainly worth a shot.

Pete, I have taken things like this to a local independent cell phone repair shop and those guys were pretty knowledgeable and prices were reasonable. You might find a local one and see what they say.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Pete. two years ago I cracked the screen on my Zumo. I contacted Garmin and for $35.00 US, they offered to either replace the glass or send me a refurbed unit, they send me a new looking refurb unit that I'm still using. You might want to give them a call.

I have replaced the screens on a couple different Nuvi's, I don't see why it can't be done on a Zumo. Might take an hour to do it the first time, every time after takes less time.

I have replaced the screen on my Zumo 550 as well as the buttons along the side using kits available on Ebay. Direct replacement and works like new...still using it after all these years.

Not hard, take your time, take care of the rubber gasket, try not to ham-fist anything.

Pete, my tablet/phone/gps was run over last summer.  When I recovered it the screen was shattered and the phone was bent like a poorly packed sandwich.  Nothing visible on the screen and the charger port was inaccessible.  I connected it via the usb cable to my desktop computer and discovered that it still worked.  There was no chance for repair -- the chassis damage was too great -- but I was able to recover the data from its internal memory.  So all might not be lost.  I'd go with the advice to take it into a repair shop for evaluation.
