MGB instead of a Miata for us, I think, the vintage bug is too ingrained.

I've been thinking for years about restoring an MGB. Unit body, so if I can find one with minimal rust (dry country here) it would be a fairly easy sand-and-paint. And an easy engine rebuild. Question will be how much Gail values airbags.

There are not many non-rusty ones left, but they're out there.   Plus, you can buy a brand new complete unibody in primer, so that if you have one MGB that still has a good drivetrain and interior but the body is rusted in two, you can swap parts from one to the other and have a nice car .... Cheaper than a new Miata if you do most of the work yourself, too ....

And people sell nice, unobtrusive roll bars for them ... with a good 3 or 5 point harness, you're almost in air-bag territory and the top still goes up and down over it ....

Well, I know where one of the older jet set is, working on his Norge!!! Talk to Bill H. He's having a wrenching party while Mrs H is away.

Bob, I was fortunate that Mark responded when the Stelvio went up for sale.  He's doing a good job with it.  I stopped to see him and wife Franki on the way to WNY last year, will probably do it again this coming June.  He's already expressed interest in the Vette when I'm ready to sell.        There's a long line of people who've said that, including a g'daughter (17 and planning her college life), a son (engineer at GM with 10+ years experience with the high performance vehicles) and several locals.

This R Bike is an '07 w/o ABS.  It's a legitimate 100# lighter than the Stelvio, discounting the extra fuel capacity.  I bought it from Laura and Dwight Blake, from eastern PA in Aug, '15.  It had 58K miles on it then, now has 80K.

The R Bike is sort of a sport bike with cases -- tight, responsive steering geometry, sport bike tires both ends, comfortable seating position, plenty of power, a good tourer with some added protection, a very good day-tripper.  This one came with nice extras -- Ohlins shocks, mounts for Trax top load cases, Russell saddle, bar-backs for the flat h'bars, etc. -- a good solid bike with a few cosmetic blemishes.  If you go looking -- and it was/is a popular bike so there are lots available -- the 2015 and newer models had factory cruise.  I added an aftermarket cruise to mine, good addition for my type of touring.

All for now.  Let me know if there are questions I can answer.  Ride safe.
Chuck, maybe we can catch up when you're riding/driving north later this year.  Keep us Hudsonites posted.
Appreciate your offer to volunteer info about the R1200R Series bikes.  I've been a member of BMWMOA and BMWRA since 1990, but have sort of lost track of where they are with their newer bikes.  It appears you're quite satisfied with your newer R bike. The last flat twin I purchased was an R1150R Rockster (2004.)  Should've kept that one.  Sweet bike!

At 69 I'm beginning to feel the age. Mainly my endurance is down. Hard to sit on a motorcycle for more than three hours at a stretch. The recent trip to China almost made me swear off air travel for good. I can still ski rings around the young studs but certainly can't cycle with them. For two-up summer travel we're even beginning to think about a Miata. On the other hand I still very much want to acquire an old 250 four-stroke dual purpose bike for screwing around solo on the forest service roads. Maybe two hours at a time.

I just turned 70, and havent had any significant physical limitations, dont feel any need to downsize bikes, and generally feel about the same as I have since my 40s (at least I think I do if I could go back in time, might be a different story). That said, the IDEA of being in my eighth decade does give me pause. Ill take it, though. 😉

I think a great replacement for the drivetrain on a my midget would be that from a BMW K1.  Basically a drop in reliable 100hp!

K1, K100, K1100, K1200 (with 130hp.)  Don't know if you posted into wrong thread, but just thought I'd respond!  I don't think you can break these older K bike engines!  I never did.

RL Burnside definitely covers all the Old Man blues in "Heat", on the "Come On In" album ...

The only one suitable for a mixed venue (excuse us a moment, ladies) is "What I used to do all night, now it takes me all night to do ...."

Old Men will recognize all the rest of it though ....

If you haven`t driven one in a while you may want to refresh your memory, as the are a truly horrible car to drive with no redeeming quality.

Thank you Chesterfield! You stuck your chin out there before I had to.  Drove an MGB for about 5 years as my only car.  Second worst automobile I have owned in the last 49 years.

Well, different strokes for different folks as they say.   You own a couple of bikes that I'd rather be knackered with a rusty crosscut saw than ride any distance, whereas my MGBs were always comfortable, good handling cars ....

I dig MGs, especially the B-models. However, they require a bit of work to keep them going...sorta like older British bikes. My cousin built one with electronic ignition and a progressive downdraft carburetor, and it became a pretty reliable runner.
