TB adjustment on 07 calvin question
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:20:04 AM »
Hey guys. It been recommended here that I have my TB checked after valve adjustment. The mechanic I use is a 45 year certified Honda mechanic. The dealership he works at had moto guzzi for 2-3 years back in the mid 90s. This mechanic adjusted the valves on the Calvin and preformed without hesitation like thats all he does, in other words very capable mechanic.
Question is this, if he does this on a regular bases on Honda TB checks, is there any reasons that my 07 Calvin should be any different than the Hondas he works on. Is there any specs he needs to know to set the TBs or any other special equipment or knowledge beyond a Honda mechanics abilities?  He does use an electronic meter but questioned weather he had the right nipples to make the connections.
Please keep in mind that these questions are coming from someone who has no idea what Im talking about so please try not get frustrated and give me something I may need to advise the mechanic.
Thanks in advance!

His meter should hook up to your bike. Hoses hook-up to the nipples on your intake manifolds, your EVAP hoses come off and go back on. There's a big screw on the LH bellcrank for TB and balances the two. Air bleed screws are on outside of TB's facing down, easily set w/screwdriver.
You will need to reset the TPS if they are out of sync. w/software. All easy.

You say with software, he uses an electronic devise to do the check, are you saying a laptop computer has to be hooked up th the bike to make any necessary changes?

Assuming the CalVin uses a throttle body set-up like the Breva 1100, then the TPS is electronically set only. If you change the positions of the throttle linkage you'll need to reset the TPS value in the ECM so it knows what voltage equals throttle closed (which gives it a starting point to understand the rest of the throttle positions from there to WOT).

EDIT - Oh, and if the CalVin uses a throttle body set-up like the earlier Calis (like my Jackal) then the software is just an easy way to see the TPS signal, which still must be adjusted if the balance is changed, but then it is done by loosening the mounting screws and physically rotating the switch instead.

I'm on the record as saying the throttle bodies should be left alone unless some other symptom (rough running/vibration) suggests it is time to check the balance. I certainly wouldn't bother setting them after every single minor valve check/adjustment.

Thanks again Kev! That was the exact opinion of my Honda mechanic of 45 years. His opinion was the guzzi TB system is basically the same as Honda and if ant broke don’t be trying to fix on it!

Yep, that's how it is achieved on the Calvin, no electronic equipment other than an accurate digital voltmeter is required.  TechnoResearch muddied the water by assuming it could be done like the Breva, but it isn't possible.
