I'm never against spending a few clams for VD*.   :thumb:

Jim, c'mon.  Those little things are snacks for a proper gooy duck (geoduc).

I'd say it flies once you steam 'em.

I wouldn't throw 'em on the kitchen counter and say "here you are Honey."

We call em sand clams or soft shell clams.  They grow best if near a big sewerage pipe.

As long as you follow the inalterable rule ...

"You caught it, you clean it and cook it" ... aux crevettes with a Mornay sauce, garnished with truffle pâté, brandy and a fried egg on top, you'll be fine.

Many ways to savor these simple bi valves.  Their fate has been sealed. Tomorrow night they will be shucked, egg washed rolled in saltine cracker crumbs and deep fried.

I experimented with a fairly thick egg-and-flour batter for the last oysters I fried and ruined 35 dollars worth of prime seafood; it's like they disappeared into the batter.   Won't do THAT again!  Light coating, light ...

 No that's a throwback to the old days when raw sewer was sent out to sea in a long pipe.  we cleaned all that up on the mainland 40 years ago for the most part. Still some islands with a pass do so as they don't have any other options. The water and clams are tested by the state biologist periodically before the flats are open for harvesting. High bacteria counts, a heavy rainfall or red tide will shut them down until they test clean .  It's been said that tainted clams will make newcomers sick but us old Mainers who grew up eating them have a tolerance. I believe it has some truth to it as we used to eat them back in the day with no ill affects.

I'm digging in Broad Cove ,  in Cumberland,   peck's only unfortunately.  There is plenty of clams to support a commercial license or two. Somehow the powers that be don't see it that way.

got it. my best friend from school days just built a home in Harpswell, my sister just became an owner/proprietor on the water in Rockport. Can't say I ever  spent quality time with a scratch rake though.
