ultrasonic cleaner or chem dip?
« on: April 13, 2018, 10:04:27 AM »
just curious, I have at least 3 sets of carbs that need a good cleaning.  are ultrasonic cleaners better than chem dips?  I do know that all gaskets need to be removed for the dip and a complete rebuild is necessary and its nasty stuff.  anyone recommend a good cheap-ish ultrasonic?
thx

None of the above. Regular old original Pine-Sol. Put in a bucket, drop in carbs and 24 hours later remove pieces and rinse with hot water. Then gaze in amazement at how clean they are. If there are any cadnium plated pieces remove them as the Pine-Sol will eat the plating off. Other than that aluminium plastic and rubber pieces will be unaffected.

Ultrasonic with a mild degreaser works great on Cadmium-plated carbs w/o hurting the plating.

I'll have to dig out some pics at home, but, I've gotten some pretty nasty looking carbs back to looking like new in the ultrasonic cleaner with Purple Power degreaser diluted about 10:1 - 20:1.    My ultrasonic cleaner also heats the water.  I do carbs at 50 degree C.

My experience with Purple Power it can oxidized aluminium and alloys and/or cause white rust.

It is important to rinse thoroughly.

I could have dragged them behind a fishing trawler in the Lake Erie for a month to rinse them out but the damage was already done during the cleaning process.

This really works great. Does not deteriorate plastic , rubber or metal. It's a little expensive but lasts a long time , what I have in the garage is Stored in a tupperware-like container about 10 years old and still effective.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Carburetor-Cleaner-Dip-Carb-Clean-Solvent-ACC-CARBC-LE-NR-Snow-OB-ATV-MC/191501960546?hash=item2c96680562:g:1p8AAOSwQGZaqtLN&vxp=mtr

A good 10 liter or larger ultrasonic should fit your parts. I have one like this and LOVE it:

I would HIGHLY suggest the 50/50 original pinesol and water. You can use this solution in the ultrasonic. I did a Carter AFB 4 barrel carb from '64. A few runs at 10 minutes per part that was in the solution and it was near new looking. AFB stands for 'aluminum four barrel', so rinsing in water several times is key. You can watch the crud leave the part as it sits.

Let it soak for an hour or so, run it in the ultrasonic, scrub and re-soak if required.

That is the one that I purchased and it worked great on some Amal carbs but the Delloroto carbs from my Lemans I are going to have to get soda blasted or something because they are not getting clean. I did the pinesol, then the nasty carb dip goop, but they still look bad.

Thanks for making that point, blackcat. Inside cleaning vs  the external  cleaning/ restoration. The dip, pinesol, ultrasonic worked well on the inside, but no visual external improvement.  I have tried just about all the items you did on carbs and  some ( in my case Dellorto DHLA Sidedrafts) only looked beautiful after sending them out for Vapor blasting. Never used a commercial soda blasting outfit so I cant comment  on that.
