I'm obviously posting this with some risk of offending A List member, but I saw this listed for sale in my local Craigslist.
https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/d/1973-moto-guzzi-eldorado/6573962908.html

As the 73 obviously the bike is old, but the owner claims a full restoration and all the numbers are matching. I have no frame of reference as to whether or not this price is unrealistic or not. Of course I have the sickness like most of you here so I'm always on the hunt. The price however to me seems to be unrealisticly highb$8k) unless it's for the selective consumer collector with the pockets... That is not me.

I must say I'm astonished at the low price associated with a "Cycle Garden" bike?

Seems that when CG advertises a Loop that they've restored, the price will be anywhere from $15K up to $30K and beyond?

I don't know anything about CG's internal motor work, but if the inside is as nice as the outside, there's nothing wrong with that price/bike combination, I wouldn't think ....

I gather as much... The only problem is finding the right customer willing to pick up that cost and carry down the line. It's a beautiful bike and I'd love to have it but 8K seems steep to me unless I was a collector with money to throw around.

I did some tuning work on that bike about two? years ago - it wasn't running properly as delivered by CG. The owner, John, has ~ $15k in it, so is selling at a substantial loss. Very strong running Eldo. IIRC, the mufflers are just empty shells - no "guts" in them - so are quite loud.

IMHO one could easily spend 8,000+ getting an average 'running when parked' or barnfind '73 back into shape...this looks like a turnkey bike and a bargain...

Price seems very reasonable to me, especially if CG really did the work, wonder if he has receipts?
be aware the drum brakes are not as good as a '74 with disk up front. can be made to work but they scare me.
the only thing I don't like about that is the civilian dash.. the police version looks so much nicer..

I think it’s too high a price for an Eldo. That bike is not restored, it’s very nice though. To be restored it would need to be correct.
That being said any bike is worth what someone will pay. That bike has much to recommend it.

From what John told me, the mechanical restoration was a complete, down to bare cases, rebuild of the engine, transmission and rear drive.

Lannis

I've seen a couple of his bikes that look great on the outside but with less than stellar internal motor work being fixed at another shop.  Personally, I'd rather have one that was worked on by Mark at Moto Guzzi Classics.  May not look as good, but it would be correct mechanically.

I've had three CG bikes here (V7 Sport and two Eldos) and all of them as delivered had running issues that needed to be corrected in order for the bike to be rideable. None of them needed any mechanical work though.

I know a *very* good mechanic that quit because he wouldn't weld up a transmission gear, among other things. That's all I'll say about that, except he would have no reason to lie to me..

Why wouldn't a full restoration include Guzzi decals on the tank? Which version is for sale, the one with the stock pegs and foot controls, or the one with the Triple A footboards?

Not judging or criticizing, but was the big-bore kit a desirable upgrade? I thought I read somewhere (likely this forum) that some people had vibration issues.

No decals on the tank because it wasn't cosmetically restored, only mechanically, just like the ad says. Photos 3 through 9 show they bike as it is now.

CG's big-bore kits have pistons that are the same weight as the original 83 mm pistons, so they don't rebalance AFAIK and abnormal vibration isn't an issue.

Or you could look at it this way, $8000 in 1973 dollars works out to $1379.18. So not a bad price.

Agreed...and if this ad is 100% legitimate, then it is indeed a bargain (IMHO) :thumb: :1:

Or, for comparison, you could have this un-restored Ambo, complete with the rare and faded red tank and chrome bores for about the same $$:

I think the Eldo is the better deal.

I hope that's the case but I think the 70's era stuff crested and is now falling a bit. Air Heads, Truimphs and other 70 era stuff (save for UMJ's) even a few years ago if priced reasonable would be snapped up in short order. Now even priced at what seems really rerasonable they are taking longer and longer to sell.
