Just a quicky please
« on: May 29, 2018, 10:45:39 AM »
My 95 Guzzi has 10gm floats in the PHF36 carbs, but in the manual it specifies 8.5 gm floats.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the 10gm floats was a common replacement, but I can't remember why.

My question is, will the 10 gm floats require a different float height measurement to that given for 8.5gm floats which is 18.5mm?

I've replaced the float needle valve and seat in case the old ones in filthy carbs were affecting the measurements that I took prior to dissassembly, which were 20mm and 23.5mm.

I've replaced the fuel taps as the filters had detioriated, on one side, the filter actually stayed in the tank as the tap was unscrewed from the tank. It took some pulling out whith long nosed pliers too! So that accounts for the debri in the carbs.

I'm just re assembling now, but wondering about those float hieght measurements.

Thanks, Izzug

I use same height for both. Was there a difference in the pin length?

I'll, measure them with verniers and let you know. I think they might have been sticking perhaps tho. A lot of gunk in my carbs after accidentally leaving the fueltaps on over the winter....... doh!

............. and thanks, I'll just hope that on reassembly that the correct float heights can be achieved.

Do you know why 10gm is used instead of the 8'5gm specified in the manual Steve?

Cheers

Hey Steve, does the pin not just come out to a maximum length, metal to metal though Steve, I don't understand how the spring which tensioned by the pin being pushed in can affect the overall length when the pin is extended.

I could see that if they were sticking or grating that they could let too much fuel in, but would have thought the vibration of the running engine would make them travel easier.

Sorry, just thinking out loud and trying to gain better understanding. Please inform me if you can mate.

Cheers, Izzug (Martin)

If you look on the needle there is a crimp so to stop pins length. Worn it gets longer shutting off fuel sooner. Mine was about 1/32" longer.  DelOrto may have had a shortage of the ones in the book.

They're all exactly the same length Steve.

I just hope I can get my floats adjusted correctly. I couldn't get anywhere near regardless of how much I adjusted the float tangs, I'll have to seriously bend the float arms themselves to get there I think.

Cheers Izzug

float level should be the same. Harpers uses different float weights to make VHB's work better with modern fuels. I believe since the fuel has a different specific gravity, a different float weight works better in making the float chamber fill (IIRC).

You've got a beaut forum name Otom.
Speaking of arse about names.
There's a franchise of Pubs in Australia called Ettamogah.
One that I know of near Albury and one I went to in West Oz, (I think)
Point is, it occurred to me that "Ettamogah" spelled backwards is...
"Ha go matte ?" in Aussie vernacular.
Loosely translated in Queen's English would be "How are you going matey ?"... :coffee:

Thanks for that info, that's cleared that up, sadly my bike tho............... I've set the floats to the right height, and changed the needle valves and seats, replaced deteriorating O'rings on the choke's fuel supply inlet, and the banjo fuel filter, and the tank's petrol taps/filters, refitted the carbs and just ran the engine in my back yard, and if anything it feels like it's worse. Once the engine was warmed up any sudden pull back on the throttle and engine would almost die off. It feels to me like it's only running on the left side, but not sure if the left is affected too. Bring the throttle back gradually and the engine would revup fine, but a lot of missing and spitting through the exhaust.  :undecided:

Think I'll habve to start a new post to elp me diagnose the fault.

I think it's time to let someone else set your floats.
