Visual mechanical differences Eldo vs Ambo
« on: June 29, 2018, 10:00:56 AM »
Hello-

I looked at Greg Bender's site and could not find this, nor a definitive thread in the "search" function.

Looking at a "71 Ambo" that has a deep-sump rear drive.....I thought all the Ambos were pre-deep sump? I suppose there may have been a cross-over period, but are there ANY other visual clues to look for, if the sidecovers have no logo? I KNOW I've seen something on Greg's site, but I'll be darned if I can find it now.

Look at the webbing on the crankcase.  Most (I don't know about 'all', but most) Ambos just have vertical webbing.  The 850 Eldos had vertical and horizontal.

The frames are the same, as are forks, wheels.
The instrument cluster on an Ambo (some of them) was the aluminum single instrument pod that looks like a spaceship.

I think there might have been a difference in gas tank lids?  At least from the very early V700's to the later 850s.

The very last of the Ambassadors had the "deep sump" rear drive and the V7 Sport/Eldorado style "waffle" cases. The only way to distinguish them from an Eldo was the smooth transmission case of the 4 spd. and (of course) sidecover logos.
