Dellorto square slide parts
« on: July 17, 2018, 04:57:46 PM »
I pulled the carbs off the beater Convert. Bike has sat in the elements forever. Yes they were filled with powdered petrol, but the castings , brass parts are in usable shape. The only casualties were the little.springs inside the accelerator pump tubes, and I had to cut the choke cables. Are these parts still available? Where? Thanks guys.

MG Cycle can supply most all of the parts you will need.

The quality of the Dellorto castings is typical of 'dirty' metal cast parts, meaning the composition of the alloy is such that with time it will start to break down, deform and though this is a slow process and probably not too evident to the eye. I have rebuilt many of the square slide VHB style carbs and as many of the round slide 30 and 36mm carbs. I clean them in a an ultrasonic cleaner with a proprietary carb cleaning solution / vapour blasting the exteriors.

Some of the carbs, primarily the round slide 36mm variety seem to be prone to deformation / corrosion of the idle passage, A Laverda mechanic specializing in Dellorto carbs, with 40+ years experience has gone so far to cut several 36mm carbs apart in a band saw to find the idle passage corroded shut. I have a set of VHB 29's that sat for a very long time full of old fuel deposits and moisture, regardless of how many hours they spent in an ultrasonic cleaner they never worked with a damn.

The same Laverda / Dellorto guru has repeatedly told me the quality of the Dellorto brass parts, specifically the atomizer, main jet and needle have a short life and on any bike this age these parts should be replaced. While you are at it the fuel needle valve should also be replaced with a new Viton tipped needle valve.

What I did was get all the DelOrto catalogues and get the stuff from the importer. But I was getting stuff way before MG started, they use same importer. Herdan in PA.

Ordered from them once... and that was the only time. Order took forever to arrive, poor "customer service".

The last few sets of accelerator pump springs I've bought don't fit into the recess of the jet holder and bind inside the bore - wrong o.d. It's been a while, hopefully they have that sorted by now. Generic springs never have the correct pressure - either too much or too little it seems. Both effect the throttle effort and slide closing.

From my dealings with them I don't think they have a USA prescence other than a drop box and phone number.  I think they're dealing out of the EU.

I've decided that anything from the mid 80s back is probably clapped out beyond cost effective recovery.  I'd suggest that the kinder thing for your nerves and pocketbook is replacing the carbs completely.

Seriously?  I'm sure my customers are glad I don't feel the same way. I regularly rebuild Dellorto VHBs very "cost effectively" and it really isn't that difficult. Yes, there are a few that are just beyond hope, but that has been a small percentage so far.

I'm speaking for myself and for the carbs that don't immediately respond to the cost effective fixes.  I'm tired of worn out slides and plugged passages.  In the big picture I'm tired of carbs.  I'd rather deal with injection.

For the round slide Dellorto's I am leaning more to just buying new ones, I have spent almost $200.00 a pair on parts plus spending hours ultrasonic cleaning them and tuning them to still not have them run as good as they should. I can get new 36mm Dellorto round slides, pre-jetted with rnew rubber intake boots for the specific application for under $450 CDN from Wolfgang Haerter at Columbia Car and Cycle in Nakusp B.C.

If anyone is looking for Dellorto carbs Wolfgang has a big stock, especially anything fitted for Laverda and Guzzi.

I have bought from them as well, decent service, unfortunately they did not stock the 26mm Dellorto round slide parts I needed from my Moto Morini 500 carbs, I got the new slides, needles, jets  and atomizers from the initial contact I provided.
