Silly tech question about swingarm CARC temp
« on: July 22, 2018, 05:57:17 PM »
We did about 100 miles today in nice (for a change) temps today.   Got back to home base,  parked the bike, and then did a temp inspection of all parts rear of the footpeg bracket.
What should the CARC approximate temp be?  I've never thought about it, or actually tried to check it on previous Guzzies after a ride..  Should the CARC assembly be warm? Hot?
Cold?  Or should it just be  near ambient temp?

The rear portion will get warm. If it is a hot day, you have a passenger, and you are running hard, it may get really hot.
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

Aside from having a possible CARC heat flash, how is the new B11 running?  I recall you enjoying your first one to the max.

On my third CARC bike now. My experience is they are in the 120 to 130 degree F range after a decently long ride. About the same as my BMW rear drive.  For perspective, my "feel" is 120 you can leave your hand on it and it feels hot. 130 is leave hand on for a few seconds before you need to remove it. 140 is you have to get your hand off in a second or less. Some folks may have tougher hands.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

The CARC was warm to the touch.  I only ask because we installed a Mivv carbon oval out back and I want to make sure I'm not getting any hard parts too hot.  When I first installed the Mivv,  I had the bracket installed to the inside of the pillion foot peg bracket.  This angled the can slightly towards the rim/tire.  My last adjustment has the bracket on the outside of the foot peg bracket.   And now the silencer is pointing slightly away from the tire.

The sound the big B is making now is pure magic!  She might even sound a tad better than the Mistral set up I had on the 1st Breva.   Not loud by any stretch,  but now louder than stock and 10 times more ballzy.  Really has a groovy sound on decel..
So far, we've only managed to add a couple thousand miles to the ODO. CRAZY WEATHER!!!
I'm still waiting for my seat guy to give me a call to bring the saddle up for modifying.  .  I want to add at least an inch of height to my seating platform...maybe 1.5 inch..  I want to give my knees a little less bend.  He'll add the inch and do a temp seat cover for us to do a day ride of testing.  If all is good,  he'll do the real cover (which is a thing of beauty - he did our Capo perch).   I also want to do a set of Buell, Goldwing, or Knight design pegs for the pillion area.   Karen and I are playing a bit of "footsy" now.  No biggie, but a drop in her pegs will also help her knees out a bit.

The more energy you put through it the hotter it will get. There are so many variables that will effect the temperature it runs at there is no definitive answer as to what is 'Too hot'. I mean if you get off the bike and you've ridden ten miles in the pouring rain, in traffic, at 30mph and the ambient temperature is 5*C the temperature of the bevelbox is going to be a lot cooler than if you've just pulled into a gas station in Barstow after boring across the Southern California deserts at 90MPH, two-up and heavily loaded in August with the mercury hitting 40*C!

Gear trains turn some of the energy they transmit into heat. Bevel gear trains turning drive through 90 degrees turn a fair amount of the energy into heat. That's why the poxy things get hot at all! With the CARC bevelbox there are two occasional, and I stress OCCASIONAL, points of failure. The first is the one that John recently experienced on his Norge where the pinion nut came loose and the pinion bearings lost their preload. In this case the box will howl like a bastard, believe me, you won't miss it! The second is the large crown wheel support bearing brinnelling up and if this happens the large seal will give up the ghost very quickly as the crownwheel starts to move around and tears the seal lip to pieces. The brake and wheel rim will get oiled immediately, you'll notice as soon as you get to a right hand bend!

Unless it starts to make horrid noises or glows in the dark stop worrying! If it will put your mind at ease I'll be in WV at the end of next week. Buy me a beer and I'll either put your mind at rest or terrify you!
