U & Your V9 Shifter?
« on: August 05, 2018, 09:34:44 AM »
I'm posting to try and help a friend. Fortunately I"ve not experienced this issue on my V7R (knock on wood) U may remember if you purchased A V9 when they first came out Moto Guzzi offered a free shift relocation kit to chg from fwd controls to mid controls. My friends bike shift linkage broke after approx 200 miles. No problem he took it back to the dealer for a fix all under warranty. Here's the problem it's been 2 mos and no linkage or repair? Is Guzzi out of these are they to be found anywhere else? Would appreciate your comments or suggestions he really would like to ride his bike!!!

Thx N Advance

Surely, they could put the original set up back on to get him riding, and replace when available? I wonder which part broke and if any parts are interchangeable.

No one should have wait months for a listed part, but sometimes alternatives, even through the dealer or not, will get the bike back on the road quicker.

Do you have a photo of the broken bit, or can point to it on a page in the parts manual? Or to something similar on the Racer? If it's a rod that's broken - I've found that those are usually way out of stock & hard to source - alternative strategies are either to have a 6mm rod (in the case of the V7s) cut and threaded with RH & LH threads; weld a s/s bolt onto the RH thread end & grind smooth; or look for a new rod from Weber carburettor linkages.

If it's the shift lever itself (on the Racer it's 898283, haven't access to V9 Parts list) - the first lever in the linkage next to the peg, this can break with enthusiastic shifting - a replacement is around $AU99, but I've had one repaired stronger than original by an aluminium welder for about $25-30.

What's broken?  I may have the original shifter from my departed V9 laying around somewhere.

Sounds like the dealer is not interested, stuff from Italy takes a week. Maybe they are waiting until they have enough for an order and free shipping.
We got warranty stuff quick, have him call Piaggio.

Assuming the dealer even ordered the parts, it's August, so Italy is shut down until September. It'll be an even longer wait.

MotoGuzzino carries a selection of shift rods, rod ends and other shift linkage components - your friend could easily reconstruct his linkage without waiting for the dealer.

Could be considered a wear item at warranty, non replacement. The dealer may be going round & round w/warranty w/no result. Call the 800 ph #.

THX everyone for your replies I have fwd each and everyone! The opinion I have is my friend is not looking to repair but rather locate the kit Moto Guzzi sent out to new owners. I was hoping someone might know a dealer who still had some and his dealer could play "Let's Make A Deal!" since it's obvious Guzzi is in no hurry to full fill the order?
Thx Again

Call the dealer in Marietta, GA, they may have it. PLUS it's 1 day shipping from parts warehouse that here by ATL.

It looks like it's just the rod end has sheared. Easily available - around $AU15 here. A mate hired a Bobber for Europe trip of 3,000km and I seem to remember he sheared one. One broke on one of his Cali's too & he now carries a spare set. I've broken two now on the V7C (in 180,000 km) and also keep a spare set on hand. Perhaps there's something out of whack with my linkage set up - haven't figured it out yet (my mind has trouble with cogs & linkages & stresses) - but it's odd that it happens more than once.
