New Stelvio windsheild coating flaking off
« on: August 04, 2018, 08:13:35 PM »
As the heading says. I have a new Stelvio with less than 1000 miles. The protective coating on the inside of the windshield is flaking off. My problem is I'm about 500 miles from the nearest dealer and no time to get there. Do any of you know a way I can resolve this without taking the bike to a dealer? I ordered a new screen from Gustafsons so I'm willing to send my faulty windshield anywhere for compensation. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks,Doug

Protective coating? I don't know if that sort of thing exists.

Yeah, I didn't think they did that either. I've read if you use polycarbonate instead of acrylic a hard outer coating is applied because the former is a much softer plastic. The people at Gustofsons confirmed this. Polycarbonate also  is a lot cheaper than high grade acrylic so I've been told.

I would start by calling the dealer where you purchased the bike. ask for the owner.

Is it pealing or flaking?  I'm just wondering if it might be a protective layer for shipping, etc., that should have been removed before delivery to the buyer (you).  I have nothing if it's flaking. Good luck.

My 1400 tourer shield started the same thing when it only had 3000 miles. I replaced it with a Clearview tall Touring shield for less than 200 bucks.

Yes, the Stelvio shield has a protective hard coating film.  Usually, this will come off when some strong adhesive material has been attached and removed.

If you have a new bike, it may be covered by warranty.

Anyone wanting a new shield, especially one with greater height or width, I highly recommend Gustafsson Plastic in St. Augustine FL. They have a base pattern obtained from our own Pyoung and they can produce a shield with all the bends and contours of the stock shield but with requested greater height and/or width.
