2018 Motorcycle Cannonball
« on: September 01, 2018, 01:38:07 PM »
Not sure if there is a Guzzi in the mix, but I do know that September 8, 2018 is the start of the Cannonball.  This should be of interest to various gear heads.   Wonderfully strange antique motorcycles attempting to travel from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon.

I had the privilege last night to see the bikes being campaigned by Team Norton out of Dallas, Texas.  Rider No. 77 is campaigning on a 1915 Norton Tourist Trophy “flat tank.”

Here is a link for folks who want to follow this.

It looks like they will be near my house. I wish I knew a more detailed route, I can't imagine them riding Interstate 86 from binghampton to jamestown, but I cannot imagine them making it in a day using the 2 lanes.

Thanks for posting this. Perfect place for me to see them. I am pretty sure they don't do expessways. Shouldn't be a problem on parallel two lane routes.

My understanding is they studiously avoid interstates and high speed roads.

The specific routes are not published because they are trying to prevent folks on modern bikes tagging along and creating hazards.    We know various stops along the way, but not the specific route.

Some of these machines may only be running 35 to 45 mph, and maybe a lot slower up steep hills.

I saw them come into Carlsbad, CA in 2016. That silver Norton was among the finishers. It was cool see them all at the end. I bought a T-shirt.

It's a bit far from home for me to see it live this time... but I look forward to more updates.

I too, saw them in 2016 - rode the Norge down to follow along to the final stop.  Fun group of folks.  I throw money at number 97 "Patience", a 1916 Indian Power Plus to help defray the costs a bit.  There is a great thread on ADV that Kevin started in 2014 detailing his journey to the 2016 and now the 2018 Motocycle Canonball.  If you want to see some more amazing machining and fabrication work that is necessary to keep one of these machine working, take a look at https://advrider.com/index.php?threads/powerplus-or-bust-eh.996958/
