New Bike: Wife Hates It
« on: September 20, 2018, 05:14:50 PM »
Got a new bike. Took my wife for a ride today.

"I don't think I'll ever ride this bike with you again. It is not as fun as the Norge."

Well, what can I say? It has been downhill ever since I sold the Ducati ST...

Jeff your post didn’t mention what your new bike is for reference. You have a few options though if you like your new bike and want to keep it. Get her a bike of her own. Buy another Norge and use it when she wants to go along. Other Guzzi s might work also. Or if she’s looking for comfort and does not want her own , a few friends have gone to the dark side and gotten a Wing just to keep their spouse happy.

Well, what can I say? It has been downhill ever since I sold the Ducati ST...

I just took a 2000 mile trip on my ST4 in the company of three late model R12GSs and an older K12RS.   For a while the BMW guys were criticizing the ST4 in all kinds of ways but when their description of  the ST4 as "low tech" was followed by the ST4 consistently returning the highest fuel efficiency of the bunch, 58 mpg was the best tank, they shut up a bit

I've got your low tech right here.. and it's really good for a pillion.

FWIW, most Beemer guys I know don't know a whole lot about motorcycles. Don't get me wrong, most Harley guys I know don't either. It seems to me that people "buy in" to a lifestyle, join the crowd, and don't look back.

Funny, your wife isn't the only one that complains about it...

some of ladies in my riding group prefer the old RT or the GS most of them are riding now...feels more alive apparently...

Although my wife cannot ride much anymore she much prefers the T-3 over the Norge.

I really like my BMW, but the first time the wife rode it with me she was crying when we got home. She didn’t feel secure and the seat had her perched quite high. I think the RS format was intimidating to her, also. OTOH, the Vintage with the Corbin seat and backrest is more her cup of tea. She talks to me and looks at things on her phone...a completely different experience compared to the R12RS.

I am hoping much of her unhappiness about the new bike is the current lack of a backrest. Well, I have ordered a padded, factory top case. Hopefully that will help her feel better on her next ride with me (if there ever is another!).

Personally, I quite like the RT. Agile, efficient (in a Germanic sort of way), light weight, low center of gravity, good power, comfortable, far less helmet and body buffeting on the highway... I just wish it looked and sounded as good as the Norge. Ah, Germans vs. Italians...

I test ride the '10 goldwing with my wife, followed by the '10 Vulcan Voyager.   She liked the Vulcan much more than the wing.

I bought the Norge for me.  The wife happened to enjoy riding with me, especially on curvy roads, long sweepers, etc.  She didn't enjoy long highway runs to San Diego, San Francisco, etc.  For that we rode a bunch of bikes to find the one she would enjoy for the slab runs.  Now there is a Goldwing in the garage next to the Norge.

We're both very happy.

You can probably get another Ducati ST for about the price of the luggage and one service on the RT.

I commuted on my ST3 today. It's a fine machine...
