Mixing radial and bias ply tires.
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:26:50 AM »
Need a new back tire on V7 Stone.
Would like to replace Perrili Sport Deamon on back with Continental Road Attack 3.  Sport Deamon on front nearly new.

Will this cause any handling problems?

No problem

I've even seen some motorcycles arrive from the factory with a radial rear, and a bias front.

We mix them.  No issues.

Some say that if'n you're gonna use a radial with a bias, then the radial should be on the rear wheel

I put the Road Attacks on my '14 V7 Stone front and rear.  Based on how much better handling the bike is now, you may end up replacing that front one too!

The Anakee III's that Michelin recommends for my BMW are radial rear and bias front. I've run through 3 sets of them and they're fine. I don't think Michelin would recommend this combination if there was any problem at all.

No problems.

I still have the Demon on the front but have a Metzeler MZ2 radial on the rear.

Bike feels much more planted.

FWIW, i have installed a RA3 radial on the front of my V7ii, and have a Michelin Activ bias on the rear.

No issues at all, and i've pushed it hard.  Bike handles much better!  Will be installing a RA3 on the rear next season....

Running Pirelli MT-60s - radial front / bias rear - without issue. Unusual wheel size on the V7 forces some compromises as few manufactures make a rear radial that fits. Based on pictures the V7 Rough comes with the same combo I'm using from the factory.

Newer BMW and different tire sizes. Mine's an '88 R100GS. Front is a 21".

My research says that radials are nice on a sport bike and distance rides under light loads.  They have weak sidewalls though, and are not a favorite for the rear of heavy touring bikes.  Even in the trike world (I read some forums) radials are used up front (AVON makes a dedicated trike front tire in radial), but MOTORCYCLE radials are not often used on the rear due to the sidewall flex and overall loading.  So I've considered them for my heavy touring needs, but rejected them in favor of the big Metzlers and Duros with the re-enforced sidewalls.
