NGC percolator Coffee
« on: November 09, 2018, 05:12:59 AM »
Last evening I bought a percolator coffee maker to compliment the moka pot and wow it produces some amazing coffee,

1. 6 heaping tbls of Café Bustello
2. Water to the full line (9 cup maker)
3. 1 egg shell

Once boiling perc'ed for 5 minutes

In about 15 minutes (this is the down side verses drip brewers) and a you have a very bold but extremely smooth cup-o-coffee. Plus the house smells amazing from the perc process.

Let the morning begin!

It seems like so many things in life newer is more convenient but not always better

I have been a percolator devotee for many years.

I like a good cup of cappuccino but, for everyday drinking, regular coffee is my choice.

Similar to motorcycles, the percolator seems to be on the wane with younger drinkers who favor the instant-quick accessibility of the Kerig things.  You will rarely now find percolators stocked at brick-and-mortar stores.  If you want one, often you'll need to look online or find another way to order one.

Yes, a percolator makes the best coffee, IMHO. They also produce a very hot cup in the process.  I do not like the often luke-warm product from the drip machines and the fast-squirt Kerigs just don't have the same taste as a good percolated cup of brew.  With a percolator, one must experiment with the amount of coffee added to determine the strength of the brew.

Now, within the percolator world, there are also many choices to be made. The really old-fashioned stove-top percolators are great but you must pay attention to them and their brew time to not over or under brew. I prefer the electric percolators.  They have a temperature sensor that accurately times the brew process.

In the electric percolator world, for many years, the best product was the American-made Farberware "Superfast" pots.  These had a humongous, high-wattage heating element that energized very quickly and percolated quickly in reduced time.  Brew time was about 1 minute per cup.

These percolators were very high quality but they were expensive.  They would cost 2-3 times more than a standard percolator.  However, the Farberware was repairable. You could buy all the parts that comprised them and repair them to make them last many years.  I did that. Over years, the heat sensors or heat elements could malfunction but you could order new parts and replace the aged ones.

That all changed several years ago.  Farberware outsourced these percolators and began having them made in China.  Yep.  Heard that story before?  Well, the price of the pots dropped almost in half.  But, you could no longer repair them.  All the parts were permanently affixed by welds etc and no replacement parts offered.  I went through several of those.  They worked well but I only got 1.5-2 years life out of them.

I then tried several other brands with mixed results.  I don't think you can repair any of them anymore but I want a pot that lasts more than 1.5 - 2 years.

My latest fancy that I have been using for about 2 years is the Cuisinart electric.  It is reasonably fast and has a broad base that makes it very steady on the counter.

There, lol.  Go brew some good percolated coffee and enjoy it with your steel-cut oats !

I'm going to try this. I have a percolator and bustelo for the moka pot anyway. Thanks!

One of my favorite cups of coffee was a cup of instant in a styrofoam cup.

Let me explain. I was in the flood at Money Creek when the National was held there. No electricity in the morning, but one full time camper heated up water on a gas grill and offered me a cup of instant coffee. He apologized that it was instant. Well, when you usually start your second pot of coffee by 8AM and have drunk barrels of coffee in the Navy and driving trucks, a cup of instant can be memorable.

You misspelled "French Press".

At home or on the road, I love the French press, makes the greatest cup of coffee ever. Got a 2 cup press for moto-camping, acrylic, packs nice and tight for the saddlebags, and,  combined with my Trangia Stove, life on the road is pretty cushy.

Old enough to say I've done it, young enough to do it again.

Espresso is a different animal altogether.  Steam and pressure-not boiled.  But you knew that.

This^^^^. I used to make coffee aboard my boat with a percolator pot on the cooktop. Got a French Press with a stainless carafe (minimal glass containers aboard) and haven't looked back.

Short story. In '92 I went to Daytona with a couple of Ducati racer friends. We used our AMA cards to get mechanics' passes to the races. Every morning we drove to the infield and hung out in the pits. Got to work on Jimmy Adamo's bike and was the refueling guy for him when he pitted during the races. One rainy morning we spent in Reno Leoni's garage bs'ing about bikes drinking espresso that he made in this battered little espresso maker. Best 'spresso ever!

Oh, I absolutely do...after a lifetime of traveling, I have narrowed down my favourite all-time breakfasts to two:

1) Gallo Pinto, with a cup of black Costa Rican coffee.

2) a double shot of espresso with a fresh baked pastry.

I was just tossing my $0.02 into the hat re: "coffee wars", and making damn sure all you non French Press users know how wrong you are.

An electric would be nice I got the simple all SS stovetop variant so I can use it in the garage on any number of heat sources out there (turkey fryer, kerosene heater, MSR stove, BGE, Lodge hibachi). Even in the dead of winter I try to do most of the cooking outside.

Peculator is good not so much because of the quality of the coffee but because of the smell :)

The key to good coffee is freshly roasted beans.  The difference between 1 week from roasted beans and 3 weeks from roasted beans is clearly visible when you are pressing.  Fresh roasted (and ground) will make any process better.

We have a "Epare hand grinder"... takes about 45 seconds for a perfect "french press" grind. No "dust-muck" nice coarse grind when set at "8", and no horrible electric grinder noise (seriously, that sound is the wordt thing ever in the morning).

Heathens... all of you.

Come here, my little vacuum pot, and let me sample the glorious wonder of how coffee was meant to be brewed...

An all-glass vac-pot, like the one I use, are fragile, are slow, require extra work to clean them properly, but oh man, they make a heavenly cup of coffee..

Harrio ceramic grinder for me.  Hand grinding is the perfect sport to keep you from watching the "watched pot".  :thumb:

Yeah, forgot to mention, ceramic burr grinder here as well.

Freshly roasted beans, kept sealed, then ground and immediately brewed... that is a good start to making a good cup of coffee.

Firstly, beans are kept in an airtight container.  Ground with a burr grinder as needed.

(1)  Espresso machine does the best. Saturdays and Sundays are started off by a large triple shot. :thumb:

(2)  Stove top moka machine.  Not too far behind but flavour is quite different.  The difference between the percolator and the moka is that the coffee is not actually boiled in the process.  I was always given to understand by the experts that coffee should never be boiled.

Either is nice and as others have said, the aroma is amazing.

My Moko pot the water only touches the grounds once. The preculator the water gets cycled through the grounds multiple times. Whats amazing is how the same coffee tastes so different from each process.

In the Moka pot the coffee has subtle hints of citrus. In the percolator its just bold, flavorful and smoooooooooth. Drip is tolerable but far inferior to either of the aforementioned.

No doubt it produces a drinkable product. Portability or single serve are not factors for me. When on the road I can drink whatever the hotel/gas station has or even go w/o.

One of the only times I truly enjoy a cup of coffee is early saturday morning in the garage before everyone else is up and I'm just putzing around on whatever listening to the radio, or Sunday mornings when my dad (sometimes mom)  and the wifes parents come over for weekly donuts, coffee and BS session.

I've always here that coffee should not be boiled, too.  We have most every brewer ever made-it's ALL good, but this stubborn old Italian prefers boiled coffee.
I wonder if it's the same experts who tell me every month in moto mags that I need now, what, 150hp to have a fun and "real improved" motorcycle?
We like what we like, eh?  Or, as Persig quoted, "What is good Phradus, need we someone to tell us these things?"
