1979 G5

Hi all, I had to remove my front wheel and now I'm putting it back on and my book calls for 100 to 108 ft  lbs of torque on the axle, seems like a lot to me, does that sound right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

German torque. Gutentight.  I believe Pete sez, "until you fart." I don't use a torque wrench. If I was guessing I'd say I put about 80 ft. lbs. on it.

Tighten it to a torque that will allow you to remove it with whatever tools you carry on a trip. In my case, the tool is the original "dog-bone" wrench and the torque figure is ~ 70 ft. lbs.

Thanks guys, the reason I asked is after I mounted the wheel and tighten it up it seems like it is really dragging, it probably just the pads on the rotors, but it don't hurt to ask

Was it dragging before you put the calipers back on?

I've sometimes found shim washers, betwixt the caliper & the flanges on the fork leg, to get proper clearances. If you don't expect to see them they can easily vanish and leave a puzzle.  R3~

I put the shims back where they came out but as usual I did not spin the wheel before I buttoned it back up. Doh.I put it back up on the lift getting ready to take the left head off to replace the o rings and gasket, I'll take the caliper off when I get it back off the lift. I always have to do it twice, you think I would learn

Loosening the axle nut then spinning the wheel should tell you if the bearings are being overly compressed or if it's just brake drag.

When ever I take it off the lift I'm going to redo it and only retorque it back to 80  and check everything out a little bit better
