Ozzie & Harriet on Triumphs
« on: January 01, 2019, 10:07:59 AM »
Whilst waiting for a bowl game yesterday, discovered on Youtube and episode of the old "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" TV series called "The Motorcycle" from 1958.  David is hillclimbing a Triumph 500, a friend has a Triumph 650, another a nice Velocette 500, then...Harriet rides a neighbors'  Triumph Tiger Cub! Maybe watching that show as a kid put the bug in my head to ride those things. I don't know how to add a link to it, but youtube is easy to search for the above info.

Adding another link is simple, my wife does it for me all the time, 😂

Well that was fun , Thanks Race Bacon  :thumb:

There is a great story about Ricky N and Elvis buying out a Triumph dealer so their entourages could go riding .

Oh , kinda hard to tell , but that may have been Dave Ekins in the hill climb scene  :thumb:.

I could be wrong, but it looks like an Ariel single on the ride down from the lake.

Did they have front disc brakes? I see a master cylinder on the bar

I'll have to look again, but I would be reeeealy surprised to see hydraulic brakes on a production motorcycle in 1958......

Interesting historical document. 1958 would be right between the "The Wild One" movie in 1953, based on the earlier real-life Hollister incident, and the "You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda" campaign that began in 1963. The usual story is that the former ruined the perception of motorcyclists among the public until the latter rescued it.

But here we have nice young people, wearing black leather jackets, having innocent fun. Even Mom joins in. And it's the Nelsons! America's nicest (TV) family.

This doesn't look like the dark ages of motorcyclists as hooligans. What's up? Was this really a more accurate portrayal of motorcycling's image in the fifties? Was it product placement by Triumph? (The Ariel single, or whatever it is, seems to contradict that idea.)

It looks like folks were meeting the nicest people on Triumphs long before the Honda ad campaign began.

Whatever the proper understanding of this thing might be, thanks for sharing it.

That's the son David? on the Triumph ? He makes a reasonable spin around when talking off, not all that easy on a 320 pound 500 Triumph..Later in the clip it looks like a 650 Triumph..Youts wearing leather jackets and no helmets but not a evil image presented for 1958... Those Triumphs were true dual sport bikes
