Ride Tortilla Flats & Roosevelt Dam
« on: January 25, 2019, 11:48:07 AM »
Thanks to a post on great rides near Phoenix I'm coming 2 days earlier, & will make time for a couple days of riding.  I'll be RV CAMPING @ the Superstition Farm in Mesa.  I'd like to ride with anyone who can go on a ride Saturday the 2nd. I'm looking @ riding from Mesa to Tortilla Flat & on to Roosevelt Dam (I read this part is on good gravel?), if possible.  Not knowing the area, I'm open to other routes you can suggest.  I'll be 2-up on a 750 Guzzi with adventure tires. 5hrs max round trip.  :bike-037: Come on you AZ Guzziests - let's go for a ride!

Fresh paved road to Tortilla Flats.  Last time I did the gravel road to Roosevelt was in a rental car and it was coated with a thick layer of dust when reaching the dam.  It's a slow going wash pan surface. You'll be needing all of that 5 hours to do the circle around Claypool, Superior, Gold Canyon.

I'm not an AZ resident, but having visited Queen Creek several times, I think I'd consider riding from Prescott to Jerome, (and maybe make the trip in reverse ..... I think the road is that good.)  I'm sure you'd enjoy both Prescott and Jerome, and especially the road between the two.  Run this past JJ .... this is his neighborhood.

I did the gravel road from Tortilla Flat and Roosevelt Dam several years ago by cage, and didn't find that to be the highlight of my road trips in AZ.  The gravel may be better now, however.

AZ Ride route update
« Reply #4 on: January 26, 2019, 11:55:40 AM »
So, y'all have talked me out of the gravel road to Roosevelt Dam.  I see the ride to Tortilla Flat is only 40 minutes, so I can do that lol ride on Thursday or Friday.  But, I'd still like to go on a couple hour ride around the Mesa area with a couple Guzzi buddy's.  Would Mesa to Miami & up to Roosevelt Dam be a good ride??
Any AZ riders want to ride  :bike-037: somewhere next Saturday??

J.J.  About five years ago I took the dirt road from the dam to Tortilla Flats on an ST1100 Honda. Road was pretty good at the start but turned to loose sand in a few places. After powering through the first really bad spot I had no desire to turn around and go back through it, so I kept on going. there were several places where I was up on the pegs to get through the soft loose stuff.  It may be better now but I wouldn't try it two up.

A nice ride would be Mesa to Superior Hwy 177 to Winkelman, Hwy 77 back over the shoulder of Pinal Mountain to Globe & back.   About 170 miles or so.  Or you could go to Roosevelt Dam on Hwy 188.   Hwy 288 takes off of Hwy 188 about 15 miles from Globe and is paved for about 30 miles up into the Sierra Ancha mountains -- beautiful views.

While on HWY 177 between Superior and Winkelman look for the Asarco Mine, the largest Copper mine in the country.

Issues have changed my ride ideas.
1st off - nobody has replied to join my ride invitation.
2nd. Looking closer at a map of Hwy 60 to hwy188 to hwy 87 back to Mesa - just looks like freeway / hwy , not a fun motorcycle route?!? (May explain why nobody said they'd ride)
3rd.  Rain on Saturday is forecast.
I'll attend the Phoenix Guzzi b-fest @ Dennys Sunday & hope to meet some Guzzi riders.

At the moment no motorcycle here.
Take the ride out 88 to Tortilla Flats and have a bite to eat.  Very curvy with many changes in elevation and great views. Great venue.   :thumb:

* The road from Apache Junction to Tortilla Flat now "REPAVED" (>$6M project) and I heard it is excellent now! :thumb:

* The dirt road from Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam is "washboard" and can be done with a car or bike, but SLOWLY.

* Roosevelt Lake / Dam can also be accessed from the highway, SR87 toward Payson...look at your map.

* Prescott and Jerome (SR89) is well worth a ride / visit, as are Miami, Globe, Superior, from Mesa...again check the map. :thumb:

* Of course, don't forget about "Vortex-Land" (Sedona), and the Red Rock country is quite spectacular, if you have never been there!

 :thumb:

Great Ride Tortilla Flat

Had a great ride, good weather, fantastic curves but not long enough of a ride.  The only thing missing was any Guzzi rider from Arizona.
Going to the Guzzi B-fest  :food:   tomorrow morning in search of the elusive AZ Guzzi rider aka ghost riders.  :bike-037:
