Deer Season opens in NY
« on: November 21, 2020, 08:28:21 AM »
Please be sure, if in NY State, to use firearms when hunting Bambi...using your motorcycle is NOT recommended.  Bambis will be a bit more skittish as they evade the orange vested ones so be ever vigilant when riding and leaf peeping.  Hope the Turkey treats you well.

At dusk here in MO there is a deer darting across the road around every blind corner. It is almost a sure thing. If you are going to take a deer with a vehicle., use the Buick.

Doesn't help.   A deer totalled our 2002 Buick Park Avenue.   A big buck, in a field, about 30 yards to the left.   I put on brakes and got over on the shoulder, was almost stopped when he cannoned into the side of the car, right on the drivers side door hinge.   Door wouldn't open any more, took it to the shop, $4000 damage on a car whose wholesale was $3800.

You can't stay away from them no matter what you do.   Probably saw me as a threat to his harem and would have gotten me at any speed ....

As I was crossing the nj/ny borders I turned east to see 6-7 thousand deer heading to jersey—-deer season doesn’t start for two weeks—and that’s the truth..

I live in rual NY just north of the Finger Lakes. The last day of bow season, one day before shotgun/rifle, it sounded like a war zone with a the gun practice...First day of gun season was quiet...Today might be different. I don't hunt but allow a neighbor to use my property for a nice piece of venison if he gets a deer.

I've had several close calls with deer when riding in the USA.

We have deer in NZ too but I never see them near the road.  Different subspecies or just greater intelligence?

Kill and eat those menaces all you can.  Just cause they are cute doesn't mean they don't taste good.

We do.  It's as much work as killing hogs, though.   You kill one, the rest of your day (or night) you're in blood and guts up to your elbows, just to get to the stage of wax-paper-lined Xerox boxes full of forequarters, neck rolls (if it's a buck), hindquarters, and backstraps.

Then it's a session with a sharp knife and a lot of freezer paper.

Pays off in the end, but some days you say "I'm not going to take this shot".   I hate seeing them on the road, though.

I remember back in June 2014, when I last visited the Mid-Hudson Valley in upstate NY, where I grew up, I was driving down the Taconic Parkway, and there were dozens and dozens of deer on both sides of the road!

We camp every year (well not this year ) around Cooperstown and it's amazing the number of deer in the fields around there. I try to stay off the roads in the evenings.

Good luck to those of you who hunt! Those landowners looking to get rid of those pesky garden-wreckers, say the word! I'll strap my bow to the back of the bike and be on my way!😉😁
Those who don't hunt, good luck to you too! I hit one with my Cherokee when I lived in Colorado doing about 50. I can't imagine the fright/pain, however short-lived, on a bike...

I took one out with my R100 on the skyline drive many years ago. I still remember seeing it’s ear come past the headlight, then rolling head over heels for an eternity.  Dogs and deer remain a huge concern when riding.

Have had one run into me back in central Mass which is why I pay close attention to deer season as well as scanning the road sides as I drive (which I know is really probably useless,,they have got that camo down perfectly).  The one that hit me came from my left side, tried to jump over the hood of a car, slammed into my driver's door then it staggererd back to the other side of the road and off into the woods.  The Buick had a good heavy door thankfully.
