Friend looking for Honda CX Turbo
« on: February 02, 2019, 09:46:22 PM »
As stated - just putting the word out for a friend here in northwestern PA, USA, who's looking for an '82 Honda CX500 Turbo.  Don't know yet if he'll be considering other years or displacements, but I'll pass any prospects along if they're out there.

I just looked at one Friday that looks pretty darn good for a 40+ year old bike. It's in Winston-Salem NC. The bike has 9k miles and started up and ran fine. The only cosmetic fault was on the fairings lower right side and an easy repair for a body man. The guy ask me 3500 for the turbo, I told him I would let him know after consulting a Honda old time mechanic buddy of mine. Feel free to PM me and I'll give you my PH #

I use searchtempest.com  ... it searches craigslist based on regions, can look at all of US, or only so many miles from your zip code.  I don't know alot about these bikes, but wasn't the 650 better & more desirable?

The 650 was only made the one year of 83 as a completely redesigned motor than the 80-82 500 turbocharged motor. They were very dependable bikes and fun to ride. Nothing mind blowing because the turbo used was very small with limited boost capability. However from around 3500 to redline you could definitely feel the extra boost. Nice bike if one is into collecting Honda's.

A bloke loaned me one once here in Oz around the late 80's sometime.
It was a 500 Turbo as I recall and the damn thing was actually very very good, (as long as your mates didn't find out...)
One of those bikes that make you wonder why you'd bother with anything bigger.
As I remember it was pretty lively up to 120 k's and kicked on to 180 pretty darn convincingly. I don't remember the lag to have been at all intrusive, probably no more so than early V-Tec VFR's.
The weather protection was well up to par as well.
They look a bit daggy now, but so do some of the rock stars and "non mainstream" video performers of that era, but like the latter, did not seem wanting when the call was given to "perform.."  :thumb:

So there are a few nice examples out there...  That Anaheim bike looks cherry, Francois!  Last CX Turbo I saw was pretty ragged....

Ncdan - I did let him know about the W-S bike, but haven't heard back from him yet.  I know he was out of town, so I may swing by his place & see if he's around yet....

I'm looking forward to seeing what he ends up with.

Thanks all for your help & discussion so far.

I had one.  I think the fairing was a lot better than an SP1000.  They had 80-ish hp and weighed well over 500lbs.  With skinny tires and a high pressure turbo they weren't a lot of fun to ride fast in the rain or on a rough road.  I can see why a collector might want one but they weren't anything special to ride.

Prices that can seem good on these old bikes are very subjective. I went 2 thousand miles to get an 1983 GL 650 silverwing for 1700 bucks. When I got it home after a few miles every orifice of every system was leaking. After getting everything brought to spec I had more than the value in it. Be cautious, just saying.
