Work
« on: March 24, 2019, 01:47:31 AM »
So on Thursday morning my boss says. Stubbie I want you to drive the satellite rig to Port Hedland (1400km) and cover cyclone (Hurricane for you US guys) Veronica. So hear I am sitting in the hotel rec room with my work buddies while a category 4 cyclone rages outside. 200+ km per hour winds, driving rain and high tide. Luckily the hotel we are in is rated to withstand a category 5 cyclone. Here's hoping. Unfortunately this thing is moving really slow, is 300km wide so we could be here for a while and when it's over there is probably not much chance of getting back in any hurry as this town is surrounded by flood plains. Can someone remind me why I do this job again.

Supposed to be leaving for Yarrie in a couple of weeks, might be delayed a bit depending on how quickly things drain/how well the roads hold up.

Looking at the map, you're awfully close to that cyclone. I hope the building does what it is supposed to. Are there concerns of power outages where you are? If so, I would stock up on drinking water at least.

I was married to cyclone Veronica many years ago. Dad told me he thought I was making a mistake. He was right. I had to learn that lesson the hard way. :violent1:  It took me longer to get out of debt that she incurred than the time we were married. :thewife:

The good thing about that part of the world is about 45 years ago a cyclone named Tracey just about wiped Darwin (Northern Territories capital) from the face of the earth. The result is some of the strictest and most demanding building regulations in the world making it really expensive to build. The upside is the buildings are built to handle it the stat is norther Australia sees about 6-8 cylones a year and this late in the season they will always be big ones might be of intrest to people. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR162.loop.shtml#skip

Actually, just looking on the wider South Pacific on Metvuw there are a succession of really nasty lows straight from Antarctica that are skimming just below NZ.  We have been enjoying nice highs in the Tasman and these currently are keeping them down there.  However, our West Coast can bear the brunt of the Nor West rain it brings.  Currently the Ropers are about to do the West Coast leg of their trip.  Hope he brought his water wings as lower down the Coast they are predicting up to half a metre of rain over the next 48 hours, and that will be working it's way up.  Fortunately, the effects tend to lessen as the front works it's way up.

Hey Stubbie, it beats sitting behind a desk in an air conditioned office. And it's an Adventure - a disaster that happens to someone else, far away. Good luck.

I don't know which broadcaster Stubbie is with, however if you are with the nantional broadcaster the young lady you are stuck with in Headland seems pleasant at least. :)

Your right Muzz. I'm with 7 so at least some thing to look at. Malik I gotta say I was a bit worried on my drive up here, especially when I drove into a wet dust storm. That sounds odd but it was raining in the dust storm. It was a bit like entering the Twilight Zone. Dusty in 35 years in television I don't think I've ever experience glamour or groupies. I know I've been looking. We have survived, now off red alert. Unfortunately when on red alert no booze is allowed to be served because people get drunk and do stupid things like run outside when there is debris flying around. There's no hot water for a shower because they turn off the gas. It's pretty boring. Luckily power stayed on for most of the town so the telly was still working. The phone tower in our area is on the water tower next door so the phone is still working also.

Not serving BEER in Australia!!!!    That's gotta be close to a criminal offence! :copcar:

As far as Roper is concerned, I don't think they ever stop selling  :boozing: on the West Coast.  However, the warnings are now flowing for lower down the Coast with talk of an "atmospheric river" about to hit.  If he is in Westport, not too bad at this stage.  If he is as far down as Franz Josef he might as well stay in the bar. :boozing: :thumb:   At the bottom end of the Island it doesn't pay to be too far from civilization in that sort of rain.  Not long ago a whole heap of tourists got isolated for a few days completely cut off with no cell phone cover.
