That's my understanding.  I'm sure I saw an announcement from Joe a while back.  Maybe on his race team facebook page?

This is good to know.  I want to run up to Buffalo one of the days.  I have read about a Naval Park in that city.  They have a Navy cruiser (USS Little Rock), a Fletcher-class destroyer (USS The Sullivans) and a WW II submarine (The Croaker) there on display.  Should be interesting.

They did a very nice job on The Naval Park-you'll enjoy it.  As a bonus that whole area has been renewed.  It was the original terminus for the Eire Canal and as such, it massively important to the early growth of the country.  Lots of great exhibits and some early locks and such have been recreated in the original spots with original bricks.  It really is worth a visit.  Plenty of good spots to refuel (yourself) also.

You may know that for the first time in Naval history a new ship was commissioned along side the retired ship of the same name in someplace other that Norfolk.  Last September the newest battle cruiser was here for that.  Over 10,000 showed up!

By that point you're only a short ways away from the Falls, too.

I just posted an official link in the calendar and associated thread for Joe. As has already been said, the dates are correct. it's always two weeks after Memorial Day.

In addition to the Naval Park you may want to put Ellicottville Brewery and Southern Tier Brewery on your to do list.

I spoke with Joe yesterday. He is on the road working so I offered to post this on his behalf:

June 6,7,8, everyone welcome to western new york rally. K.O.A. campground Westfield N.Y. 8001 ny-5 Westfield N.Y. dinner friday, saturday. bisquits and sausage gravy saturday morning. awards and 50/50 saturday evening. cold drinks and coffee all weekend.contact joe casey at. joe_casey@msn.com   716-560-0562.

I have linked this to the calendar as well.  No doubt Joe will add to this thread if he needs to.

June 6th is a Thursday. I know some folks arrive early, but shouldn't the correct dates be the 7th through 9th, Friday through Sunday?

Thanks Charlie. I rechecked previous threads from Joe and you are correct. Changing it now.

edit: There are a fair number of people who arrive early. That is not a problem with the KOA. People are on their own for food on Thursday and may get recruited to help put up the Big Top when Joe gets there. :whip2:

Okay, I had the dates off by a day and in an effort to correct that, ended up having to start from scratch. This should soon be merged with the thread started by Ronkom and all should be good in Guzzi Land.

Thank You again for bringing that to my attention Charlie. :boozing:

Pretty sure it's Croaker they have in Buffalo, an SSK-conversion and sister ship to Cavalla, which is preserved in Galveston TX.

Thanks for the info.  I was not sure of the name of that sub.  I've toured WW II subs in Mobile, AL, Manitowoc, WI and Muskogee, OK.  Plus, my brother served on the Halfbeak back in the day and he thought of it as great duty.  I'm absolutely amazed at the conditions those swabs lived in during their times at sea.  I was a surface Navy sailor during my time.  I'm not certain I could handle being a sub-sailor back then.  I guess I'll never know.

Pass through Cleveland and tour the Cod. Still afloat. It is the only Gato Class still fully in tact. Sometime in the recent past they got at least one of the engines running.

If you get down to Galveston, visit Seawolf Park. Cavalla (SSN/K 244) is there, as well as USS Stewart (DE 238), the only remaining Edsall-class destroyer escort.

Cavalla sank the IJN carrier Shokaku, and played a principal role in getting the (eventually ill-fated) nuclear submarine Thresher's reactor restarted in Puerto Rico in '61.

It is The Croker.  How in the world those guys got into that sardine can and fought is beyond me.  Full marks for them all.  It's TINY inside.
I'll try and stop down in the mornings to say hi and meet some new friends.  This event is in prime soccer season and as a certified referee it's a real busy time for us.

Two boats named "Cavalla", just so no one gets confused.  The WWII sub SS-244 sank the Shokaku, decommissioned in 1969 and is on display in Galvestion ...  the nuclear sub "Cavalla" SSN-684 you mention was decommissioned in 1998 and scrapped 18 years ago ...

I get claustrophobia just thinking about those old diesel fleet submarines ...

I went aboard the Dogfish at the sub base in Groton. You know what sub sailors call surface ships? Targets...

I may have to miss the WNY Rally this year -- our granddaughter is graduating from high school this year and her graduation party is on Sunday, June 9.  Our son, her God Father, is coming down from Michigan for the party.

I could head to Westfield on Thursday (tour the Cod in Cleveland on the way up), be at the campground that night, make a quick trip to Buffalo on Friday (see the Naval display there), back to the campground that night, hustle back home on Saturday for the party on Sunday.  Tight, but maybe doable.

Big soccer tourny weekend.  I think I'm assigned both days.  I will stop by with a door prize if at all possible.
As it most likely will be a rather quick turnaround if you see me please say something.  It's always great to meet folks in person.  I'm the bald guy with the big nose!
