This is good to know. I want to run up to Buffalo one of the days. I have read about a Naval Park in that city. They have a Navy cruiser (USS Little Rock), a Fletcher-class destroyer (USS The Sullivans) and a WW II submarine (The Grouper ?) there on display. Should be interesting.
Pretty sure it's Croaker they have in Buffalo, an SSK-conversion and sister ship to Cavalla, which is preserved in Galveston TX.
Thanks for the info. I was not sure of the name of that sub. I've toured WW II subs in Mobile, AL, Manitowoc, WI and Muskogee, OK. Plus, my brother served on the Halfbeak back in the day and he thought of it as great duty. I'm absolutely amazed at the conditions those swabs lived in during their times at sea. I was a surface Navy sailor during my time. I'm not certain I could handle being a sub-sailor back then. I guess I'll never know.
If you get down to Galveston, visit Seawolf Park. Cavalla (SSN/K 244) is there, as well as USS Stewart (DE 238), the only remaining Edsall-class destroyer escort. Cavalla sank the IJN carrier Shokaku, and played a principal role in getting the (eventually ill-fated) nuclear submarine Thresher's reactor restarted in Puerto Rico in '61.
When I went 12 years ago (!) -- had a great time. Visited the naval stuff in Buffalo, had fun with everyone in the vineyard, and traded bikes! Some pictures
Dad and I will be there sometime on Thursday. We're staying at Theater Motel. At 86 dad's not into camping anymore.
