Look at the steering head and note the VIN.  Then look at the engine and note the numbers stamped on the side.

The last six numbers should match.

Ooohh Thanks... This is very Important...  As they don't on the 1997 1100i Sport I'm looking at...  This can explain why the oil cooler is missing...
An engine swap...

Are you absolutely, 100% sure, that this should apply to the all 1100 Sport, especially to the 1997 1100i??  Not that I doubt your expertise, but for me this is a first Guzzi post 1980 and therefore my lack of knowledge...

Molto molto Grazie!!!  This is greatly appreciated!!!

Carlo

I do not think engine numbers always reflect the vin number.. don't know about your Sport but have seen Tonti frames with unmatched numbers.

As long as the frame no. matches the title, you're legal.  If the engine no. does not match the frame then the engine was changed out.

If I am not mistaken, For the pre-1980 Guzzis, such as Loop, Tonti frames, in the US, engine # matches the frame #.  It was decided that the engine# should also be the frame#, and so an aluminum vin plate was riveted (stamped with same # as engine), on top of the "real" VIN# or frame # which was always different and stamped into the steel...  This can very well be seen in the US V7 Sports for example...

In Europe, they decided to keep the actual steel stamped Frame # as the VIN# and link it to the engine different #.

Therefor was wondering if it somehow still was the case, ie for this 1997 1100i Sport; last 6 VIN digit must match the 6 engine digits...

It is exactly how you state it...
Also Engine looks newer, cleaner that the rest of the bike, that also caught my attention...
The oil cooler is missing, which I find very odd for a 1997 1100i Sport, since they all had it...

Carlo,

I'm sorry.  I misspoke.  Engine number will not match.  I just checked my Sport 1100 to confirm.

I bought my Sport 1100 new, so I know it hasn't been mucked around with.

No worries...  Good to know for sure...  Now still an incentive to buy again;)))

Still wonder why no oil cooler...

There was a recall because of the oil cooler lines failing on some bikes. Perhaps it was bypassed?

The mention of title is not a big deal either as long as the vehicle is 15 years old or older and the VIN comes back clean. For $48 + 6% on the NADA fair value VT will issue a valid registration that can be converted to a title buy states that issue titles.

From mailing in the 4 pieced of paper work to having a VT plate and registration in my hand as 14 days.
