Better Headers !
« on: April 23, 2019, 11:03:43 AM »
A previous owner of my '04 California EV wrapped the headers with fiberglass cloth.  I discovered the wrap left the headers badly pitted underneath.

After a half hearted attempt to polish them, I decided to switch gears and have them ceramic coated.  I sent them to "Jet Hot" in Oklahoma City.  3 weeks and a couple hundred bucks later :

This is the "Classic Polish" -- I think it looks good on the EV.  The floorboard covers the transition from header to muffler nicely.  Hopefully they will retain their finish a long time and require less upkeep that stainless.

There should be a special place in hell, well maybe not hell, but somewhere, for those who insist on wrapping pipes.

Those look nice!  Wrapped pipes typically means something is wrong with the pipes.  One of my bikes is becoming a bit of a nightmare finding parts for, and I found a set pipes for it on eBay, but they were wrapped.  I messaged the seller to unwrap the pipes and take a picture, but he would not.  No sale!

Haha ! I agree.  -- The same miscreant that wrapped the pipes also had ground effects lights stuck all over the poor girl... Apparently not everyone shares the same vision for a motorcycle  :thumb:

I've still got my 1000 headers wrapped, I agree that it's generally to cover a problem

With mine it was a flaking coating, cannot be a***d telling the story

I don't think it does any harm if the wrap is applied properly and the recommended waterproofing paint is applied.

It's not a problem for me as the only water it sees is when I wash it, been on 5 years+ no problem except the ocassional reapply of the recommended sealent.

It wouldn't have been my first choiice granted but I'm happy enough with it

The Jet-Hot looks great on your EV. That's a great process.

That Jet hot finish looks great, and money well spent on such a beautiful EV.

Instead of refinishing the poor condition SS headers of the vintage Dutch Bos system I found, black ceramic coating:

Has anyone had any success with a Thermal Barrier Coat (TBC) on the inside and leaving the outside bare stainless/chrome?

We use TBC on hot end gas turbine blades to protect the metal from the extreme heat

Since its the heat that blues stainless/chrome, if you could keep it away it seems like a solution to me
