Pictures and Story from the Quail Gathering
« on: May 09, 2019, 12:18:00 PM »
Pipeburn just put up a great collection of pictures and a story from the Quail Motorcycle Gathering. It is worth a look. Lots of amazing bikes here. Mid way down the set of pics is a bacon slicer tuype engine on a bike that has the name "Douglas" painted on the tank. I am unaware of the history of other maker's bacon slicer engines and i have never heard of the Douglas marque before.  Interesting stuff.

Looks like the Douglas is a boxer with cylinders in line with the frame...

I'm guessing it's a mid-'50s Aero Caproni/Capriolo 75 Corsa. Confirmed: https://www.velocetoday.com/brandes-elitch-true-believers-and-monterey/

nice work charlie! thank you.

if it had the money and the room i would collect bikes like capriolo 75 corsa. i like the quirky eccentric bikes like this and like the aeromacchi chimera and that wonderful, bulbous old henderson.

Robert E. Fulton II, upon deciding to circle the globe, acquired a 1937 Douglass (horizontal across the frame twin). At the time he was with the US Foreign Service in UK.
In the 50's iirc he moved to Newtown, CT as did I in early 70's. Some may have read, or seen the film "One Man Caravan". We were friends for many years. I treasure those memories.
Who else had a Luscome Silvaire, Stinson Reliant and P-51, all at the same time?
Meeting him and sleuthing out with whom I had spoken; then finding him where we both had our radios and tire service done was a hoot for all.  R3~
