Bungee Cord Protectors - home made
« on: May 16, 2019, 09:31:08 PM »
Nothing special but trying to keep the Norge looking good and figured out the belt from a bathrobe fits perfectly around the metal portion of a bungee. And they are light purple not pink.

Don't use Bungee cords, Rok straps are much better and don't scratch the paintwork.

I do use cargo nets though, like a 6 ended Bungee

Your idea was a good one :thumb:

Rock straps won't snap back and take your eye out either.

Never lost anything using bungees but...

I, too, have never lost anything, but over many years of using bungees, I've had a couple of the type you show fail and I've had failures of the black rubber variety.  Likely it was damage due to the sun that led to the failures.  But still, I continued to use them...

Several years ago, two of our forum members* lost their life after a failed bungee cord tangled with the rear wheel.  After that, I stopped using bungee cords altogether on my motorcycle.  I now use straps and quick-release connectors.  Everything needed is available at any hardware store--several colors to select from if that matters to you.

Measure in seconds, the straps might not be as quick to use as bungee cords, but I have the assurance that no matter how long they bake in the sun, they will never fail.

* somebody here is sure to remember their names; it might have even been prior to wildguzzi.com on an earlier version of this Guzzi community.

I'm with Daniel, rarely use bungees anymore. Same reason, story about two lives lost due to failed bungee. I still use them occasionly mostly around town for small lightweight things, heavy things always get nylon straps with fastek buckles.

They are the best.  Just wish they made a continuous one too, no loops.  I'd wear one as a belt!

I have an older Cortech bag that sits on the rear of the saddle, and is held to the bike via two bungees built into the base of the bag.

When I did a fly and ride in July of 2012 to take delivery of my Griso in Dahlonega, GA (thanks, Steve!) I used the bag as my carry on plane luggage.  I'd already shipped a helmet and other bulky items to the dealer.

Not wanting to scratch the paint on a brand new bike, I purchased a length of foam insulation for 1/2" copper pipe.  I think it was pre-split so it could be placed around pipe.  I cut several sections of approx 8-9" length, put those around each of the four bungee cords, making sure they kept the bungee from making contact with the paint.  Worked beautifully.

For holding tent, sleeping bag, and thermo rest to the cargo rack on the R100GS, I use the nylon straps BMW uses to hold their bikes in their shipping crates.  I think I still have a couple of them the dealer gave me when I purchased my 85 K100RS from them.  Those were the days!  Dealer took time to show me the best way to mount luggage to my new bike.

EDIT:  Found a pic
