Cass, WV Rally on Memorial Day weekend, 2019
« on: May 20, 2019, 08:03:12 PM »
Since New Cumberland is no longer happening, some of us regulars from there are thinking about wandering across the mountains to Cass.

Location is the Boyer Motel:

Food is on your own. They will have coffee and some snacks. Some double rooms are still available (call the motel directly). (304) 456-4667

From the (closed--you have to ask for entrance to it) Facebook page:

Dates are Fri May 24-26
We [West Virginia BMW club] also have use of the pavilion.

Meals- You will be on your own for all meals. The club doesn't have any organized meals planned

Rally Charge- The only thing that you will be responsible for is the camping or hotel if you choose to go that route. Suzy does have rooms left if any one is interested, and the rooms were remodeled.

The Club- We will provide Coffee, Tea, Hot cocoa and hot water. We will also have soft drinks and water for a donation as well as a few snacks like in the past and hot popcorn in the evening. We will also have a donation bucket out for our charity, The Salvation Army Angel tree if you want to donate.

Ride Safe and we look forward to seeing everyone. We will post updates here if we have any.

I've been down to the Cass area every year at least once a year since '84. Thinking about doing an overnighter to the Cass Rally.

Lots to see and do in the area, for me the main attraction is Cass Scenic RR.

I wish Frank and Suzy still had Boyer Station Restaurant open, the food was always great there. But, The Bears Den is within walking distance and there are more places to eat in Durbin, Green Bank and Cass.

When I was there last summer, the Bears Den was sadly out of business and the campground was completely full with RVs and campers
belonging to construction workers on the pipeline. Have they all moved on now?

Last summer, when I rode to the BSA rally in northeast Ohio and rode up US250, every motel room within 60 miles of Elkins, WV was full with pipeline workers, and I had to just ride on to Ohio instead of stopping, so everyone check first if THAT'S still going on ... !

I was by in October on the way back the WV Mountain Guzzi Rally. The Bears Den was open as was the gas station. <EDIT: I just called them: they are open for business.> Boyer Station Campground was still pretty full of large travel trailers/campers that the pipeline workers live in. This has been a bit of a windfall for Frank and Suzy, allowing them to remodel the (back row of) rooms last year. The Cass BMW Rally will have use of all the facilities they normally do, except tent camping will be in a different area AFAIK. Unlike in years past, Frank and his crew will not be providing any food.

As far as I know they still have rooms available. So does the Marlinton Motor Inn.

For those in the cass WV area and  can go to the railroad museum go! You can ride up the switch backs and see how they logged those steep  slopes
pushed by a unique Shay locomotive engine.

I stumbled on to this place while chasing a skirt that worked there many years ago and I believe they are still operating the Shays'..

If you're a gear head its well worth seeing these engines that are like new!!

Also the roads in WV are very good,(understatement), you would have to go the Alps to find any better....really... .that good!!!

:-)

Shays, Heisler and soon Climax. The line from Cass to Durbin along the Greenbrier will reopen this year too.

It wouldn't be the first (nor the last) time that I got rained on when traveling to a rally.  Can't be any worse than the last 15 miles going to the Virginia Rally last year. Only time I've ever been "waterboarded" by my own helmet.
