Day 6: only rode about 200 miles, but made it over Lolo Pass. Camped at Powell CG. Wonderful spot, pitched our tents right next to the river. Fell asleep to the sound of rushing water.

Day 7: best morning of riding yet. Incredible roads: routes 12, 13, and 95 so far. The ride along the Salmon River is pretty cool.

Right in the sweet spot guys!  Enjoy the wonderful riding!  Highway 12 is a 100 miles of blissful riding!

Funny...3 of us, all on Norges too stayed at the Wilderness motel on the way back from John Day back in 2016...great little budget motel with a restaurant attached to it...and an old school bus parked out front.

Spectacular scenery there...right at the intersection of the Selway and Clearwater...just beautiful area to ride!

This is getting too painful for me.

My own brother, who LIVES IN IDAHO, has gotten me to agree to take a motorcycle trip AROUND LAKE SUPERIOR this summer, even though I suggested MEETING IN WYOMING. I guess he doesn't appreciate what he's got out there.

<sigh>

Anyway, keep having fun. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting the pictures, imho there is nothing better than a 2V Norge for riding long expanses in the west. I owned a 1200RT and test rode the 6 cylinder beemer. They can have them.

Day 8; ride from Belleville, Idaho to South Logan, Utah really sucked; hated riding through Salt Lake. However, now having a great time at the Utah Blues Fest in Salt Lake.

Near the Idaho/Utah border, at a fuel stop, a few kids washed our bikes for a small donation.

Day 9: taking day off the road in South Logan, Utah. Loving the ride, but a day without jumping on the Norge is welcome. Moab and then Colorado National Monument tomorrow.

You’re on your way to some more exceptional riding. Hop on over to Gateway Colorado if you can after visiting Moab (about an hour away on some great twisties), and then take 141 all the way to Telluride after enjoying lunch at the Gateway resort (very cool car collection there as well)!  Spend the night in Telluride and  / or then ride either over to Ouray, Silverton, Durango or down to Rico, Cortez, Durango.  There was a big rock that fell on the road from Telluride to Cortez...not sure if they cleared it...near Lizard Head pass.

More pics...great trip you guys are having!

Day 10: rode from South Logan, Utah to Grand Junction. US 6 in Utah was fun. Stopped at Dead Horse Point State Park.

From Moab we rode on one of my favorite roads, Utah 128. Followed the Colorado River for most of the way.

Day 11: camped last night in Colorado national Monument. Beautiful location. Got a late start due to some rain that fell just as we were starting to pack up. Took rt. 13 to Craig, CO, then rt. 40 to Steamboat Springs. Cold and wet most of the way. In Steamboat we jumped on  rt. 14; rode through Poudre Canyon. Stunning views, exciting ride; dodged thunderstorms all the way to Fort Collins. Spending next few days with my daughter and grandkids.

Sorry, no pics

I hope to hit Beatooth and Lolo myself in a couple of weeks.  How many days ahead did you book rooms?

From Beartooth, I'm not sure of my exact route through Wyoming but probably through West Yellowstone.  It looks like gas stations are few and far between.  Did you have any trouble finding fuel on this part of your trip?

NC

End of day 4: rode to Thermopolis via Wind River Canyon (Thanks for the tip PR). Staying at nice mom and pop motel (el Rancho). Off to Beartooth Highway tomorrow.

Careful on my my bike mate...
They look good together, is the red one really faster or is that a fallacy ?
I was trying to remember who did that wire wheel conversion, they look good on the silver one.

NC: except for the first few days, our exact route and schedule remained flexible, so after we stayed in Thermopolis, we had no motel reservations. This did become an issue on the weekend near the Sawtooth Mountains; had a tough time finding a room. Fuel was never really a problem, but we usually did top off whenever we passed through a town of reasonable size.

Huzo: the silver one.is Kirby's; the wire wheels do look nice. Just my impression: his bike seems a bit faster, mine gets about 10% better fuel mileage, but seems to run hotter; Kirby has a different map, mine is unaltered.

Day 12: spent the entire day relaxing with my daughter and two granddaughters in Fort Collins. Looked over the bikes. I brought along a quart of oil, but have not had to open it yet. Had to add a few pounds of pressure to the front tire of both bikes. I've been getting over 50 miles per gallon of fuel in Colorado. Son in law had stocked the fridge with some great local beers; drank some good ones. Headed to Kansas and route 36 tomorrow.

Day 13: rode from Fort Collins to Seneca, Kansas on rts 14, 6, 385, and 36. Staying in a nice little mom and pop motel called the Starlite. In western Kansas stopped at a little motorcycle museum and was totally surprised by the size and quality of the collection of bikes, including many classic Indians.

Day 14:  the great luck we have had do far on this trip finally ran out, horrible weather in the Midwest. Tried to punch through a weather front, but we're unsuccessful. Rode in hard rain for a few hours and gave up for safety's sake. Staying in motel in Jacksonville, Illinois. Would rather have made it home, but this was the wiser choice.

Day 15: storms finally subsided enough for us to make it home, though I got soaked during the last 5 miles.

Total distance: 5,100 miles.

Number of traffic citations: 0, but did get a warning for speeding in Nebraska, had an officer light up (didn't pursue us), and another flash his headlights at us.

Bike issue: nothing major, but I did lay my Norge down when I ran over some sand in the Nebraska National Forest; no visible damage.

Though it's nice to be home, I really enjoyed the entire trip, save for the last two days of fighting through rain on the slab. Kirby and I got along fine, and will likely take other trips together in the future.

Two tired old Norges and a tired old biologist. I guess Kirby is tired, too.

John:

I know where you are in that picture.  Welcome home safe and sound.  It seems that keeping rain gear close is the new normal whether you are going cross country or only to Rabbit Hash. Sounds like it was a great adventure that was made easier by having a great bike and travelling companion.  There is a lot of confidence to be had when your bike just purrs along under you for mile after mile.  You have plastic, so if need be, you can camp indoors.
Remember back in the day - 2 pairs of jeans, a selection of t-shirts and maybe a flannel shirt if you remembered, some hiking boots, a leather jacket, some kind of gloves, a cheap tent bungied to the rear seat, just enough cash in pocket so long as nothing broke.  Oil the chain (maybe) and off you went to find adventure.  Fairing?  maybe a plastic handlebar windscreen - Windjammers were unobtanium for old guys.
Maybe our paths will cross soon and we can have a beverage at the Hash and you can recount your adventures.
All the best.
