Quick Disconnect Fuel Line Tool?
« on: June 21, 2019, 06:31:53 PM »
I have been unsuccessful in disconnecting the quick disconnect fuel line under the tank of my '10 CalVin.  I tried a whole number of times just using my fingers and hands and just couldn't get the darn thing to pop apart.  Of course, all of the other connections came apart readily.  I tried using a camera to get a good look at the fuel filter (which is what I wanted to change out), but couldn't maneuver the thing to confirm that what I had in the tank was a plastic/aluminum filter.  So, for the moment I gave up, put gas back in it and went for a ride today - yes the bike ran fine again after my fiddling.

Is anyone familiar with any quick disconnect fuel line tool(s) that could assist in this process.  I doubt that my disconnect has ever been apart and whatever filter that Guzzi put in the tank at the factory is still the one that is in there.

I'm guessing that one or maybe two of these:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/autocraft-fuel-line-disconnect-tool-ac522-w83114/9020004-p?c3ch=PLA&c3nid=9020004-P&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_channel=online&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgLLoBRDyARIsACRAZe53CJqD1Iko_AktrkkTlrnlP327n4W9HEGe4FT0mjIXv0ZodZmRYu8aAomAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
might do the trick - but is anyone familiar with something like this?  I was guessing that I needed two of them, one from each side of the disconnect, but I don't know for sure.

Yes I have watched YouTube vids on the disconnect, but no matter how many times I watched and tried, it didn't work for me - I didn't want to snap off the angled nipple that the fuel line is attached to.

Appreciate any thoughts on this...

I don't have that model of bike but can you unplug the fuel pump and then start the bike?  That should depressurize the fuel line and make the connection release easier.

They are right- you need to depressurize the line. However, don't feel bad if you demo the fitting. They are a POS anyway. I went to the local autozone and bought a generic replacement for $10. Much better construction and fits onto the same barbed male fitting. You'll be glad you did.

The problem comes in when the male barbed fitting breaks as you are trying to get it disconnected, then things get difficult.

There is very little space under the Griso tank so when mine proved reluctant to disengage I cut the plastic line with a razor blade and installed one of these:

It puts the disconnect where it is easy to reach and opens easily.

Even with the tank on the bench and the line depressurized it was hard to remove the factory item.

To the OP, Before you attack the fuel line with a tool and end up in trouble, please digest my post below which I have copied from a previous post when someone else was having trouble with it.

Once you learn the technique it's not difficult at all, but it does require just the right touch and technique,,,, patience ,,,, good luck with it.

I had copied and pasted this in quickly last night,,, I've edited it this morning and added a bit for clarity, fwiw fyi.

The secret in getting the QRD fuel connection apart on my CalVin was in the technique; as you push forward on the female connection against the male part, something disengages unlocks or releases inside the connection,,, while maintaining forward pressure in this "unlocked" state,,, gently wiggle it back and forth and using your finger tips as wedges between the male/female connections to gently push them apart,,, the secret is the push/pull pressure at the same time,,, don't think of it in terms of pulling it apart,,,it's more of a wiggling it off while it's unlocked internally by you maintaining forward pressure, fwiw ymmv.

I didn't relieve pressure on my fuel line, just kept a rag handy for a little fuel mess, it popped off fine,,, once I learned to push/wiggle/wedge with my fingertips.

"I had read horror stories, about guys getting into trouble and breaking the fragile plastic quick release disconnect,,, so when it came time for me to take the fuel tank off my CalVin,,, I gingerly danced around the "quick release" disconnect for literally hours,,,lol.

After much research I found a couple of videos on youtube posted by a Breva 1100 owner showing a very simple method,,, once I learned it,,, it was a 10 second job.

I read about people using small tools, screw drivers etc to help them,,, imho, I wouldn't go near that fragile plastic with any type of tool,,, I like the soft tender touch of my fingertips as described below.

Grab the end of the outside of the female part of the quick release disconnect between your index finger and thumb with the end of the pads of your finger and thumb extending slightly over the end of the female part. (I may have supported the whole plastic elbow tank fitting with my other hand to prevent it from breaking)

As you push the QRD female part forward against the male part,,, splay the pads of your index finger and thumb slightly outwards and as you maintain pressure pushing forwards,,, squeeze the ends of your finger and thumb together in the space between the female and male part,,, maintain forward pressure,,, maintain squeezing finger tip pressure between the female and male part,,, wiggle it gently back and forth,,, keep pressing forward as you use the ends of your index finger and thumb as tiny wedges to work gently pushing it backwards at the same time and work it free.

Difficult to envision and describe,,, but once I learned the touch,,, very easy to do.

      Good Luck

      Kelly

Thank you all.  I thought I had depressurized my fuel system when after I had removed the majority of the fuel I was unable to start my bike.  I had tried to start the bike after disconnecting every hose and electrical connection that I found - thinking that, when it didn't start that meant that the fuel pump was depressurized.  I think that I need to only remove the pump connection, start it, let it run out of fuel and then remove what fuel I can in the tank and disconnect the remaining electrical connection and the two hoses (one breather and the other maybe a pollution hose) and then finally move to disconnect the quick disconnect fuel line from the plastic nipple part.  I will try again and will not approach the connector with anything other than fingers.

Thanks again...

BTW, in the Calvins it was the fuel hose on the pump that was the issue.  It turned to mush from the ethanol and pops off.  You need the proper fully submersible hose and correct clamps.

I too purchased fi quick disconnects from a bmw supplier

Much easier, the v11 plastic disconnects had a reputation for breaking - not saving it wasn’t user error but the aftermarket connectors are solid

One of the problems with that QD is that there's no tactile feedback in the disconnect. It only moves half a mil/quarter of a mil towards the elbow, so that a gentle pull on the pipe eases it apart. I have found that a little (very little) lube  (with silicone, PTFE, or lanolin) sprayed into the end of the female bit helps. Once you stumble across the technique, you've a better chance of repeating it. With practice, it gets easy. Once you've got it off, then you can examine what happens when you push the female part - actually not a lot, but then you know for next time. I also put a tad of lube in there to make it easier next time.
