Clean those pipes
« on: July 09, 2019, 10:47:13 AM »
Not sure what this product is called in other countries but it is the bee's knees for cleaning stainless steel exhausts here in the UK.

It is basically a toilet cleaner, the  active ingredient is  hydrochloric acid (10%). So they may be similar products out there.

I'll try just about anything once... My 12 year old Griso is getting harder to keep clean with elbow grease.

Any trick to it?  wipe on - let sit - rub a bit - rinse?
Ever onward...

Industrial toilet bowl cleaner, for stainless bowls and sinks, available at places like Smart and Final.  Very aggressive on fasteners, strips the zinc plating and leaves them grey.  Makes S100 seem mild.  I don't think I'd use it on a motorcycle except with surgical precision on areas it won't harm.  I'd probably remove the exhaust first to prevent damaging other surfaces.

Also useable as port man's Alumaprep, for removing corrosion from aluminum before painting.

I use Barkeeper's Friend on my SS pipes.  I would not use a product containing HCl acid on an exhaust system.  Could just be the 35+ years I spent doing  Chemistry control on nuclear power plants but HCl on metal is not conducive to long life.  High heat only makes it worse, rinse very very well.

Use a pan cleaning sponge, wipe on, leave 30 seconds then  rinse off with water.
It gets rid of the bronze colour on stainless pipes straight away and with a bit of metal polish afterwards makes all good with little effort.
If you apply it carefully and give it a good rinse afterwards there shouldn't be a problem, it is after all a domestic product not hopefully designed by the Russian GRU.

I'd have a hard time putting something that dissolves dead bodies on chrome or stainless.  Yes, I may have watched too many documentaries about serial killers.  Anyway, I just use Mother's.  It's formulated properly for the intended purpose.

Tried it, worked great! So let the hand wringing, and pearl clutching begin.

Optiglanz for my Griso.  Its expensive but you get about 3 years per bottle.
