V11 Bassa kick/pop
« on: July 17, 2019, 05:21:55 AM »
Good morning

I have a 99 V11 Bassa.   When riding at lower RPMs the engine will kick/pop occasionally.   It feels like a momentary loss of power.  Never long enough that I'm worried the bike will stall.  Makes more of a single sputtering noise then a loud pop.   In the winter I can cause it to happen while letting the bike warm up when first started.   That being, I'll have the choke open and once the bike is sufficiently warmed up to not stall out it will start with the "kick" every once in a while (10 to 30 seconds).    While riding I only notice it when the bike is warmed up.    Most notable in second gear but it seems to happen when the RPMs drop to or below 2K.  In second gear this puts me at about 25 to 30 mph.

From reading around, I have had my mechanic install a new TPS.   I also disconnected all the stuff I had attached to the battery and then took a wire brush to one of the wire connectors to try and get some rust off.   After both of these times I'd like to say I noticed a small improvement.   At the very least after I cleaned the battery connection the kick isn't as big.  But still persistent.

Thoughts or ideas?

Appreciated, Andrew
Andrew

No Guzzi needs to be under 3500 Rpm. Tune it ax Pete says and clean all relays, fuses, ignition switch and cam sensor.

Sounds like issues I had on my Bassa......did everything that has been suggested here, but it will randomly "burp/hiccup" in various throttle and/or load conditions.  Do the tune up thing as best as can be done (follow the tune up procedure, good quality parts) then take it out for an "Italian" tune up on your favorite open stretch and continue doing so at every opportunity.  Good luck!!

She had a fluid tune up when the TPS was installed, a few months ago.  So all that should be good. I will work on cleaning up the relays, etc.

Regarding the low RPMs.  The bike sounds raspy when RPMs are over 4K or so. particularly if just coasting.  I swear my tachometer isn't accurate though.  Does 2K rpm at 30 mph sound right for second gear?

From personal experience (and many others as well), Veglia is not a reliable instrument, so your tach could very well be going "south".  I don't pay that much attention to speed/tach readings in different gears, but about 3K at 60 m.p.h and about 4K at 80 m.p.h. is what I would expect to see on my Bassa (both in 5th gear).  You and/or your mechanic should also take a look at the cam sensor as a part of the tune up protocol....make sure it's clean and set at the proper gap.  As far as the "raspy" sound you hear, wouldn't venture a guess on that one.

What is a 'Fluid tune up'?

Related question: Are there maps available for the Bassa/Jackal/EV series? I did a quick look and couldn't find any. The only exhaust mod on my bike is the H-pipe.

Tnx

I think Beetle has done some work on the P15 series ECU , but the factory mapping on the early 15 series bikes with the open loop Magnetti Marelli FI systems was pretty good .

Meinolf has some good maps for the 15M.
I think beetle has been working on maps for the 15RC for the CalVin.

What is a 'Fluid tune up'?

Oil, transmission, and final drive fluids changed.

??? Sorry, changing the oil does exactly zero for the tune of the engine, really, nothing. The tune is all to do with how the engine pumps. In your case you need to make sure the base values for the TPS are correct, the adjusted values are correct and the signals from the required sensors are accurate.

As I said. Tune it! There is someone on this board not far away who will be willing to help you for beer and a feed! Stop talking to charlatans in shops.

once everything else is right the trim might need tweaking. my 2001 EV needs +30 to run right. In addition the H pipe kills some of the mid range and is a great place for air leaks leading to popping.
also the speedo is very wrong 10-12% depending on tires. 80 is more like 72 and 60 closer to 54 MPH.
from memory with a GPS for the MPH 60 in third is 4000 RPM 70 in fourth is 4000 and you better be doing an honest 80 for fifth. any slower in the top 3 gears and it's lugging.
best to take up the offer if possible Pete is talking about!!!

Bassa's seem to have come with a ecu with a map that runs miserable on closed or trailing throttle. Find someone that is able to remap it with a Beetle map. Do this after a head retorque and valve clearance have been done. It should be done by someone who is competant and familiar with the process.  Don't operate it under 4K rpm with a load on the engine. It will do it but it will hammer the drive train to death. 4th gear is overdrive and 5th is double over is the way to think of it. Third gear at around 60 is good for most situations, I like to run them so that I can vary the speed with the throttle

Maps from Meinolf have been very helpful in getting my Jackal running right.
