1971 Caddy Parked for 25 Years - Found it on Google
« on: July 17, 2019, 01:17:49 PM »
My type of CSI  -  Recent article talks about a 1971 Caddy in Brooklyn that had been parked for 25 years finally gets towed. Nowhere can the actual address be found, but found one photo online showed a tiny bit of the intersection.

And voila, https://urlzs.com/6x9o7

11th and 16th Intersection - can still be seen (probably for a while) on Google streets

Link to some of the articles:

Two big questions I have... I wonder what all inside, and... how did they get that road repaired under it... hmm, it has been moved I take it?

I’m pretty sure that’s a ‘70, used to have one of those.  That is a wild story, even here in Chicago a car would not last long before it was towed and you got a bill in the mail for the favor.

Sorry , I just see an old junk car providing a nesting place for rats that had probably leaked most of its fluids onto the street .

Comments on the Caddy from residents in the area claim the car is seen in different parking spots, has a current NY inspection sticker. They also call the owner by name and claim he knows the police so they don't bother him..But it has been towed....The interior looks like storehouse of junk..That Caddy has the 472 engine that's popular with some hot rodders......A real highway floater...

The hot setup is the bigger version, the 500 engine, with the higher compression 472 heads on it. One of the car rags put that combo in a Chevette and ran 11 in the 1/4 without doing anything else to the engine. Crazy easy power. It's a good looking mill, you see them in custom cars at the shows.

No WAY did the tires on that thing have air in them after 25 yrs, no way.

I don't know; I think it's possible.

We had a two-wheeled David Bradley garden tractor that my Dad bought before I was born.   He replaced the original cleated tires with auto snow tires when I was 5.

I used that tractor until 2013; I was the only one using it, and I never put air in the tires.   When we let it go when we sold my Mom's farm, the same air was in the tires that had been there since 1965 .... 48 years by my calculation.

A friend of mine had a '67 Cadillac Fleetwood that he only drove in parades.   In 2015, I asked him whether he could still find gas that would burn in it.   He said "I don't know; I've been running the same tank of gas since 1992".   They sho' don't make gas like that anymore!

A buddy of mine has a 1976 AMF Sportster in his office. Says it has factory air in the tires.

I actually LOVE stories like this, and have few of my own! My most recent favorite was a '69 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 that I dragged home from a farmer's field about 15 yrs ago. He advertised it for $500 with grainy photos and sparse info, but I thought for $500, I can part it out and make $$ (that logic has been the downfall of many men greater than me...).

Drove over 2 hrs to get it, and it turned out to be SO rusted out that I was actually afraid to touch it for fear of it dissolving or my getting tetanus. Seller was weird and kind of severe (and this was on a dirt road in the middle of NOWHERE), to the point that I thought I'd better just follow thru and see if I can actually get it home.

It had sat there for over 20 yrs, the guy wasn't quite sure.

And yes, there was air in the tires!

So I hooked up my tow-bar and flat-towed it at 45 mph all the way home, expecting any minute for a tire to blow or a spinning driveshaft or wheel bearing to seize.

You couldn't sit on the driver's seat for fear of it falling thru the floor, and the rear leaf spring shackles had been replaced with blocks of wood wired into place. I had to lie to my wife  :thewife: about how much I paid for it.

The carb was full of bees nest shards and there was no air cleaner. So I swapped on my GOOD carb off my running Landcruiser of similar vintage, put in a battery, dumped 5-gal of gas into the tank (tank didn't leak!), AND THE DAMN THING STARTED RIGHT UP AND PURRED LIKE A KITTEN! I braced the underside of the driver's seat with 2x4 cross-beams and drove it around the yard, AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HIGH AND HARD, WITH NO LEAKS IN THE SYSTEM, something un-heard of with this model in the best of condition.

So yes, I will grant you that the caddie's tires may have held up, but the smart $$ would bet that someone added air over the years.

I advertised the Landcruiser on ebay when I concluded that no-way was I going to try to salvage such a rustbucket, advertised it accurately, and some pigeon from TX bought it for $800 and had it shipped there. I actually made money (on paper).

I had a '69 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, rescued from Vt. Long ago. Not as in bad of shape as you describe, but a bit rusty.
I cut up an old washing machine for the metal patching.
Quite the vehicle. 3 speed, straight 6, low gears. Not much for the highway, but nice skid pans for offroad. Heater in the back too.
Used to like hearing my buddies say "oh, were stuck now" Then I'd laugh and drove off.

I actually LOVE stories like this, ....

There seem to be quite a few "YouTube" videos along these lines, where someone finds an old diesel truck or tractor somewhere, clears the brush away from it, shovels out the bees' nests, clears the fuel lines and injectors, jumpers a battery to it, and starts it up.

Of course, these sorts of things are subject to flim-flam, like all of the "Reality Shows" around, but some of the amateur ones ring true, and maybe are true.   The only ones I really trust are the ones that either I've experienced, or my friends have done (like the experiences here).

Used to like hearing my buddies say "oh, were stuck now" Then I'd laugh and drove off.

They were/are a very capable vehicle, but I got mine buried GOOD at a remote lake cabin in Michigan's UP many years ago, in deep snow and 0-deg weather. At night.

This was before cell phones, and my cousin had this bright idea to go ice fishing on this lake at night, after his day shift (it was maybe 5:30 pm, but dead dark up in the UP). We put the dog & fishing gear in the FJ40 and drove top the remote 2-track road, over a foot over snow on the ground, and when we turned the 90-deg left-hander, the FJ40 slid off the frozen 2-track and down a foot or so into the deeper ditch. Stock, the FJ40 had open axles, and in this case the right/rear wheel spun away along with the now-un-weighted left/front wheel, and we were dead in our tracks. The winch mounted on the front that hadn't worked in a year or so that I was going to get around to fixing someday was of no use.

Did I mention middle of nowhere, 0-deg, no cell phones, foot of snow? We walked over a mile back down the dirt road to a house and my cousin called his friend. He showed up in an F-150 4x4 with straight six and 5-sp tranny. We hooked up a tow chain, and he effortlessly pulled the FJ-40 out and thru the remaining 1/4 mile of un-plowed access road around the turnaround and back out to the "plowed" main road. I was humbled, and own a nice F-150 4x4 myself today.

Yeah, but you were trying to get stuck
Had the doors off crossing a river in Vt. One time. watching trout come in one door opening and go out the other side.
Kinda  busy, or I would have pulled out my fly rod.
Great engine in those things, straight 6 is perfect for offroading
